have you read possessing the secret of joy by alice walker? it... yeah. i mean, she didn't entirely detail "dry sex," but dealt with female circumcision and stitching up the vulva to make the man feel bigger. very painful and sad.
I haven't read the book but I've definitely read about female castration. I remember a famous case of a woman who was fighting for sanctuary here in the us because if she brought her daughters back they were going to do the female circumcision.
::shudder:: It's a terrible thought. I am so sad for those women and girls that have to go through all of those things.

I'm taking a nature/nurture course. evolutionary ethics has been fascinating. it shifts my worldview to being less about my world and more about a natural world out there ... sorta like looking at gaia from a distance. what are her populations doing? what are her cultures reacting to?

Definitely. That's one thing I was talking about with my husband...how I look at certain injustices here in the US but see how that compares so little to some of these atrocious things happening in other cultures. Globally, it's an entirely different beast!
