This morning, as I was getting ready to leave and began transferring my things from the purse I used yesterday to the purse I was going to use today, I discovered that my wallet was inexplicably absent.
I retraced the previous night's steps in my head: Came home from seeing Stardust (which ended with a trip to Barnes and Noble), set my purse and books on the chair by the kitchen table, commenced to read on of the new books. Finished book, went upstairs to bed, taking purse and bag of books with me. Set purse on bed, emptied book bag and placed new books on book shelves. Brushed teeth, put on pajamas, went to sleep. Okay, so I didn't take it out of the bag, maybe it fell out. I check the bed, no wallet there. LIft up the sleeping cat, no wallet there. Check the pocket of the pants I wore the day before, no wallet there. Run downstairs to check the chair and the floor underneath, no wallet there. Go outside to check the floor of my car, still no wallet. Run back upstairs and check the bed once more, no wallet. Theaten to beat the cat if he doesn't stop hiding my things; cat only yawns. Check purse planned to use for the day (again), nope, it hasn't magically appeared at the bottom of my purse.
Oh. Shit.
Try to remember what was in the wallet. Not a lot: my debit card, one credit card and my eddie bauer card, plus license and insurance and medical cards. Nothing that can't be replaced, but not quickly and will be a pain. Shit, now I'm late for work. Hurriedly pack a lunch and run to the car. Try to not freak out on 30 min train ride to office.
Get to work 15 minutes late (8:15). Call Barnes and Noble to see if I left the wallet there - they don't open 'til nine. Call bank to ask if they can put a hold on my card 'til I figure out if I've lost my wallet completely - they don't open 'til nine. Check online to see if there's been any activity on my account - webpage blocked. Gah!! Call 24/7 hotline, no activity reported, but no human to speak to. Watch as clock slowly ticks to 9am
Call Barnes and Noble again, listen to hideous recorded message again, finally get a real live human on the line - and YES! they have my wallet. Whew! Freakout mode ends, adrenaline slowly leaves my system, and by 9:15 I'm ready to crawl back into bed and sleep until Tuesday.
