I tend to explore diverse character types when GMing to a greater extent than when playing. As a player I won't pick any archetype which I'm likely to get bored of before the end of the game/campaign. (And that rules out a lot of things.)

Most amusing cautionary tale was when, having noticed that my characters tended to end up as party leader, I created a character who couldn't possibly end up leading the party.

That was lathany's "Witchcraft" game. I ended up leading the party. It was painful (but fortunately often amusing too).
