Title: The Gap, Act 3, Scenes 1 & 2
Fandom: The Gap
Author:
never_chan Genre: script, soap-like
Rating: PG13
Disclaimer: I do not own "the Gap" or take claims in owning. Also no money is being made from this and all rights belong to the respected author.
Author's Notes: With that said... this was another assignment for my English class ^^ only this time we had to write another act to the play "The Gap" after the author ended his story. So here's my take on it... i hope it doesn't do the play to shame >.< (so yeah... if you don't really have a clue what's going on, you could read the book ?_? or something... i have the first two lines of the end/last scene put in so yeah)
Truthfully though... i hated the play. To me it was boring and well not my thing, so if it comes off as that then you know my inner thoughts (though I'm not quite sure how you can make something so bland exciting but meh?) Just don't let the author here me say that *hides*
But one more thing, this was my first time doing a script in the form of a play - so taken after someone else's work, or boring or not I'm quite proud at the fact that this is my first script! XD Yay!

Scene 1
Scene takes place; Vi and Saul enter on the dramatic scene of the struggling couple (Evan and Dawn). Who are staring another down. Evan with hope in his eyes and Dawn with fear and astonishment, she is confused at what Evan has just told her. Awkwardness falls upon the room like heavy rainfall.
VI For heaven’s sake! What is taking you two so long - oh, um what’s going on?
SAUL It would seem Vi, (smiles twinkling) that love is in the air
Silence
VI Right, well I’m here to tell you two of you to get a damn move on! A natural disaster isn’t going to stop just for your lover’s spat, you know.
DAWN MOTHER!
VI Yes?
Evan shifts uncomfortably, while the mother/daughter stare another down. And Saul is looking between adoringly at Vi and his own son, curiously.
EVAN We should get going, your mother’s right Dawn. The flood won’t stop for anyone
DAWN (Stares at Evan in shock) Fine, Mother I don’t appreciate your insensitivity to the situation
VI (Rolls eyes) Yes, dear
Dawn ‘huffs’ and storms out, Evans following suit though more subtitle. Saul walks up to the grinning Vi
SAUL Quiet the daughter you have there, Vi
VI Well she’s more like me than we both like, but if she really is my daughter I bet she’ll make similar choices as well
SAUL Care to tell?
VI (Smiles) No, I think a good mystery is what keeps a everyone on their toes… (Exits)
Saul is left alone, as sirens play down the street. He ignores them though, just staring around the room. He reaches out to the TV in longing, but the Sirens call him back to the door. Sighing, he places a hand on the light switch a gives a small laugh
SAUL A mystery eh? It seems like things are turning out just like 1950… (Turns off lights and exits)
[Exit]

Scene 2
Scene takes place; at a shelter, the group is sitting by the fireplace drinking hot chocolate and Saul comes over with blankets for everyone.
SAUL Here you go little ladies, I thought you could use some warming up
VI That was very sweet of you Saul, Meegwitch
SAUL (Barks in laughter) well done! We’ll make an Indian of you yet Vi!
EVAN (shakes head) Dad, please here
SAUL There where do I do it, my son?
CHESTER (snorts) Try the bedroom
Both Evan and Saul glare murderously at Chester, who shrugs innocently
VI (Coughs) Well, interesting conversation Chester I see you are a very opinionated young man. Are you on the debate team or something?
CHESTER (looks at Vi funny) what are you on lady?
VI Oh, um just some Advil and some other subscribed drugs as well. (Shakes purse) You?
CHESTER (hiding laughs) Um -
SAUL (glares at Chester) Nothing at the moment Vi, so what do you think about this flood? Like the 1950 isn’t it?
VI Actually I was only a little girl at the time (notices Saul’s face fall) but from what I remember it was very terrorizing. Fortunately we lived in the country, so wasn’t affected by the river. Actually we recently lived there before we moved last year, isn’t that right Dawn?
DAWN Oh, yeah.
VI (frowns) you know Dawn, you could be nicer to our guests as they were at our house for dinner you know.
DAWN I don’t really feel very hostess-like mother
EVAN (Sighs) I think I should go…
VI Nonsense! If Dawn wants to be a stick in the mud, she can leave otherwise she will smarten up and act the way she was brought up!
DAWN Fine! (Grabs blanket and exits - well moves to another table on the other side of the stage)
CHESTER Well, if she gets to leave then so do I right pops?
SAUL (Brought out of day-dreaming, though staring at Vi) Oh sure, son… that reminds me! Chester, you mind finding Brendon and bringing him over, maybe get some snacks as well
EVAN (Pulls out dollar) Get your own snacks dad, there’s a vending machine over there
Saul sighs, but takes the dollar and trudges over to the vending machine, across the room.
CHESTER Well I’ll be going now, don’t miss me too much
VI (popping open bottle of Advil) Oh okay dear! Have fun! (Waves)
Chester stares at her, before snickering and exiting. Saul returns with a bag of M &M’s and other candies… where he got the money, Evan isn’t sure. And plops down in a seat beside Vi, smiling adoringly as he offered her a candy, who declines, though after urging accepts much to Saul’s happiness. Evan sighs, before getting up and heads to the Vending machine himself
(Switches to back and forth mode: witb lighting & actors)
SAUL So, Vi - you said you grew up on a farm?
VI Yes, cattle actually I inherited everything. Though after my husband and I divorced I sold it. We were starting to go out of business anyways, and Dawn and I moved to the city to start a new life
SAUL And now this flood, things must be tough
VI It is, though we manage. So what about you?
SAUL Me?
VI (Rolls eyes) Yes you, unless there is someone else here I’m not aware of
SAUL Oh I grew up on a reserve -
VI I meant are you married, you do have two sons you know
SAUL (realization dawns, and slow grin appears) No, actually I’m single. Just as you are (leers)
VI That’s nice (moves out of Saul’s reach)
Saul sighs, but moved back into his own seat. Offering Vi another candy, who accepts
EVAN This is pointless, I should talk to her! But on the other hand, she is so aggravating! On the other hand if I don’t she’ll get madder! On the other, other hand I don’t even know what I did wrong! Why can’t she just accept that she’s not perfect and not always right?! It drives me insane, but I love that about her - no, wait I’m supposed to be angry at her. Though I don’t know why, not anymore… Grr, why are women so damn complicated?! (Slams fist against vending machine) Damnit!
Dawn approaches from behind, having spent the last ten minutes spying on him from behind a plant
DAWN Taking your anger out on public property, doesn’t look good on record
EVAN (startles) so you’ll report me then?
Both stare at another - before Dawn breaks contact and sighs
DAWN No, I actually came here for a bag of Doritos© could you move please?
EVAN Uh, sure
Dawn inserts coin, and pushes buttons. Both watches as the bag falls into the landing and Evan reaches to grab it for her
DAWN Thanks
EVAN Listen Dawn -
DAWN (smiles) I am, listening
EVAN Oh well, um I really think. Or I would like if we talked you know how we were interrupted at the house and all; I don’t want things to end there.
Pause
DAWN I thought about it, and what you said back there about the floods, and I don’t want it either
EVAN (confused) The flood?
DAWN No, things to end. At least not the way they have been lately. And I realize I haven’t been completely fair to you either, I’m so used to having things my way and whatnot but I never thought about what you wanted. Even though I’m unhappy, I think you’re just as unhappy as well
EVAN Well I’m not, Dawn I am very happy being with you I just I don’t understand what it’s like, being with a girl
DAWN (huffs) Then you should learn
EVAN Dawn - please! Don’t do this, talk with me please! You said you wanted too!
Dawn storm back to her table, (exits in other words) and Evan sighs as he leans against the Vending machine
EVAN What the fuck did I do now?
SAUL - And so, after hauling everything onto Mr. Black’s roof we all pulled out our fishing lines and went fishing
Vi laughing and wipes tears from her eyes (laughter tears)
VI Oh that is really something Saul. Did you ever get rescued?
SAUL Yup! It was only though after we caught the fish and were cooking them the smoke attracted the attention of a rescue boater, they stayed for a meal of course before we were taken to high ground
VI Well it seems more happened in the flood than the history books let on
SAUL Indeed, this is cakewalk to the flood in 1950
VI So you said. Oh, look Dawn is talking to Evan finally; I really don’t know what’s wrong with her. Maybe its about loosing Mr. Connelly, oh I hope he’s okay
SAUL (Places hand on Vi’s comfortably, who pulls away) I’m sure he’s all right. If he’s got two fine ladies like you in his family then he’d be damned not to get home
Vi (laughs) Your language is quiet detailed
SAUL (Shrugs) its part of my charm -
VI Oh look! Ah, it seems Dawn is still pissy
SAUL (glances over Vi’s shoulder, watching as Dawn storms off and Evan sulks) Maybe its Evan’s fault as well. The boy was never good with feelings, wore his heart on his sleeve
VI And you?
SAUL I am an Indian! (Puffs chest proudly)
VI (Confused by statement) Oh, okay…
Meanwhile Evan has braved to approach Dawn’s table
EVAN Er, Dawn
DAWN What!?
EVAN (winces) look, I’m sorry okay. Sorry for everything, though I don’t know what I did back there, but for everything else I’m sorry. I’ll understand if you want to call things off
Sighs
DAWN don’t do that
EVAN what?
DAWN I said don’t do that! And you shouldn’t have to apologize either. Well at least not for earlier, and I should say sorry as well…I guess the flood is getting to me more than I thought, though atop the part of the whole “Race” issue
EVAN Can I sit down?
DAWN uh, sure
Evan takes a seat across from her, silence over comes them, in the back round there hear the light idle talk of the ‘other people’ there. As well as tidbits of Vi and Saul’s conversation before it turns silent again, lights zoom in on them and they long awaited ‘confrontation’ takes place.
EVAN
And So?
DAWN
Both look at another and laugh
DAWN I don’t know why but I’m suddenly so nervous, and I don’t know why.
EVAN You’re nervous? You’re the only girl I’ve come close to, I think I might hurl right now
DAWN (Smiles) Please try to hold it for now
EVAN I think I can do that
Both laugh, again
EVAN So how are things gonna be from now?
DAWN I really don’t know
EVAN Okay tries this, what do you want. Put aside everything you’ve felt lately
DAWN Everything? But that’s apart of the problem
EVAN Exactly
DAWN Oh, okay. So you mean go back to when I didn’t even know you? (Sarcastically)
EVAN Exactly
DAWN you said exactly twice to answer a question in a row, it doesn’t sound proper
EVAN So sorry (mimics Dawn’s sarcastic tone)
Dawn rolls eyes
DAWN Fine then, will do things your way. I suppose, when I first saw you I thought I saw a nice, funny, good looking guy who I wouldn’t mind getting to know, but when I did I couldn’t have been proved more wrong
EVAN But you don’t know me, at least your opinions of you thinking you know me are wrong, cause you do know me
DAWN that doesn’t make any sense
EVAN It makes plenty. What I mean is, we did fine before you found out about my heritage. The way we treated dogs and other pets, or what we ate. You thought it was cruel and inhumane, but the things your culture does just as worse.
DAWN Here we go with race again…
EVAN Dawn, listen to yourself!
DAWN (glares) this is myself Evan! I thought I explained that, the girl you knew was just a façade and she isn’t coming back. And stop trying to difference things on what culture people are and stuff
EVAN Why do you care so much? If you claim that you’re racist it should matter!
DAWN What I am doesn’t matter! The problem isn’t me Evan it’s us! Both of us are too different to be alike. You say you care and want to make things better but here we are yet again, fighting! And I’m sick of it, all the fighting. The flood, your dad flirting with my mom!
Stage lights on Chester and Vi, who are frozen in the position of Saul trying to kiss Vi’s hand while she squirms away.
SAUL Oh come on, you have beautiful hands!
VI No I’m quiet all right Saul
SAUL Are you sure? Hey are you a hand model perhaps?
VI No, I work downtown at the bay
SAUL Selling hand products?
VI No!
SAUL All well, you still have very beautiful hands
Vi finally yanks her hand away as light turns off and settles back on Evan and Dawn.
EVAN Leave my dad out of this!
DAWN Fine!
EVAN Fine!
DAWN Evan, from what I can tell we can’t even stand ten minutes together before fighting. If that’s how things are going to be for the rest of our time together, I don’t want it!
Dawn turns to leave, Evan calls out
EVAN And if some other guy comes along and you find yourself flooded once again? Will you run too? Stomp on his heart and say cruel things? When will you stop building a wall and realize its pointless, and just surrender?
Dawn sighs, tears in her eyes as she slowly turns around
DAWN I’ll come to that when I’m ready, but for now I think my walls are sturdy enough to safe my home from drowning. As well as myself, goodbye Evan
Evan standing there all alone, looking lost and confused as he watches where Dawn exited, knowing it’s actually over this time. As he dejectedly sits down at the table and starts to eat the bag of Doritos© sound fills the room, as the conversations of the ‘other people’ in the room are heard faintly, before some soft crummy music then lights dim and finally shut off.
[Exit]
