“Yuki” whispered Momiji into the darkness as he felt along the sides of the walls in hopes of a light switch
A small groan was his answer, which only made the bunny quicken his search, please be alright
Finding what he was looking for the blonde flicked the switch with ease as light flooded the room; he heard a hiss of pain and quickly dimmed them to a minimum “Sorry”
“No, it’s alright” echoed the weary reply and Momiji bit his lip as he knelt beside the bed-ridden teen
“How are you feeling?”
“Better than yesterday” mused the rat, trying to draw worried chocolate orbs away from the painful heaving of his chest, his clammy hands and pale complexion, all symptoms that showed his illness. Managing a half smile Yuki propped himself onto his elbows to face his guest, “So what brings you here?”
“Hari-nii told me about your condition… ne, Yuki why didn’t you tell me about this sooner? I never would have let you -” sniffling as unshed tears shone in bright eyes, Yuki sighed as he drew his hand to place it cautiously on the blonde’s leg
“Miji-kun it’s not your fault”
“But you’re sick now!”
“It’s just a small cold” reasoned Yuki pulling his body into a full upright sitting position. “You know I’m prone to them, but with Hatori looking over me, I’m sure I’ll be fine”
The blonde didn’t look convinced, but the pleading look in his cousin’s eyes he changed the subject. “H-how are you doing with school?” he asked lamely, while pulling on a weak smile.
Yuki looked at him for a moment, but to Momiji it felt like eternity he was subjected to his piercing stare, roaming over him diligently - not missing a single detail on his face. (It was enough to cause the bunny to blush lightly)
“Honda-san has brought my homework, but I haven’t been able to touch it - I’ll be fine though” waved of Yuki with a warm smile as he gingerly reached over to grasp his cousin’s hand. “Momiji, why did you come really?”
Looking down at his lap the blonde chewed his lip thoughtfully, mulling over the muddled words in his head “I - I wanted to see you”
Silence.
Yuki stared and Momiji turned further away in shame, inwardly scolding himself. Great, now you’ve gone and scared him away… stupid, stupid, stupid.
“I wanted to see you too, Momiji”
Stupid -
“Nani?”
Face flushed a rosy hue, whether from fever or embarrassment the silver haired boy smiled at him gently, squeezing their conjoined hands for support.
“I asked Hatori about you, when he came to check up on me. I’ve been waiting for you to come visit me, and I’m rather thankful you did”
Now it was his turn to blush as Momiji tried to obscure Yuki’s penetrating gaze, hiding his face meekly “Yuki…”
Smiling as he shifted his weight, the rat moved aside pulling the bunny onto his futon with him as he wrapped paper thin arms around his waist, much to the alarm of the younger boy “Yuki no - don’t strain yourself!”
Ignoring Momiji’s protest, Yuki crooked his neck to place a chaste, sweet kiss on the boy’s lips. Affectively shutting him up, “I’m feeling better already”
Giving up the boy sighed in contentment, leaning back to enjoy his cousin’s hold while it lasted. His mind drifting to a land of pure bliss where Yuki was well enough to kiss him again, and again, and again. Hm... “I love you - “
Something about the dream shattered, as Momiji felt his safe-hold shift. Crap.
“Well that was unexpected -“
“Yuki I - “
“Love you too, Momiji” cut in the older boy, watching with alit grey eyes as the blonde’s mouth fell open
“You -“
“You sound surprised?” mused Yuki as the blonde stupidly nodded. Yuki smiling as he ran pale fingers through his hair, matted to his scalp with sweat and sick. He tired not the cringe at the oily feeling of not having a bath for the last few days, as he wasn’t even able to move. “I meant to tell you the other day, but I didn’t want to ruin the moment”
Momiji was bewildered; ‘ruin the moment’ was Yuki insane?! This was practically one of the happiest moments in his life; didn’t the rat feel the same way?
“I don’t see how that would ruin things” admitted the blonde and Yuki lowered his gaze.
The unspoken thought that drove fear into all of their hearts lingered in the air between them
“I don’t care about Akito!”
“But I do” whispered Yuki quietly, his voice barely audible. Looking sad and broken, Momiji hated when Yuki looked liked this. Like when he hated it when he was just a little kid when he used to shadow Hatori around the Sohma house, when they would drop into Yuki’s room to see the newly formed bruises that littered his porcelain face. And he hated it now, when memories of the past still haunted the boy, clinging to him in a vice like grip; suffocating him.
Reversing roles, Momiji tentatively reached over and took the older boy’s hands in his own, “I’m not going to stop loving you just because Akito wants me to”
“I never asked you to”
“Good. And I expect you to take me on a date when you’re all better”
Yuki let out the barest of smiles, “I never said I wouldn’t”
Momiji grinned from ear to ear. “Good, because you’re my boyfriend now”
The shadow lingered but the bunny cut in quickly, chasing it away “secret boyfriend of course”
“I like the sounds of that” Yuki’s eyes sparked, with a familiar slumbering feeling, as he ducked his head capturing the blonde’s mouth with his own. Hands untangling from Momiji’s as they lowered the blonde onto the futon, who giggled as feverish kisses danced along his jaw line. “Yuki that tickles”
“Good”
Needless to say, the next day Momiji didn’t go to school as he came down with a cold.
