Back in the mid-to-late 1990s, I was working on my family tree. It was sparked by a visit to my mother back home after she obtained a copy of a family tree put together by a cousin on her father's side. I haven't had the energy to research a family tree, but I did get some great info by doing a simple genetic test at 23andme.com. It traced my mother's side to N. European origin, and found some distant relatives on both sides. Also provided some interesting health indicators. It's $99 so not for everyrone, but I found it very interesting.

Good luck with your search -- maybe I'll try the free site.

Genetic Genealogy is an interesting field and can be a great tool if you've hit a wall in your research. Recently, I've been studying the results of Genetic Genealogy on a website for Europe that shows the incidence of Red Hair and Light Eyes! I was particularly interested in the incidence of these in Spain and found that there exists a correlation between these traits and my father's surname's concentration in modern-day Spain. I was interested in following up a lead in a letter that my late uncle had written about his grandfather's having had green eyes and red whiskers when the family is from Alta California, Mexico. It would also be quite a hoot to find out that I'm Irish on my "Mexican" side! ;)

One of my favorite shows to watch (on Hulu) was Who Do You Think You Are? NBC cancelled it, but TLC picked it up over a year afterwards. It will start airing Tuesday, July 23.
