The general gist of canonBasic information on the 99 AU Background: Damian's future diverges from canon right after The Return of Bruce Wayne. With Bruce alive again, Damian thought he still had his title as Robin and that everything would be smooth sailing for the rest of his life. Obviously, he thought wrong.
Two years later, around Damian's twelfth birthday, his mother Talia Al'Ghul bestowed him one last gift in vain hopes of bringing Damian back; said gift was a blue ring once worn by Damian's grandfather, Ra's Al'Ghul. Damian didn't think much of the ring and put it aside. On a spur of the moment about four or five months later - he and his adoptive older brother Dick were visiting Middle Eastern contacts - Damian decided to wear the ring as a peace offering to the League of Assassins.
Unfortunately, the gemstone embedded within the gold ring started to glow the minute Damian stepped onto firm ground... and before Damian knew quite what was going on, time stopped altogether. Everyone - even Dick and magically-powered people in the area - couldn't move; Damian was the sole person who knew what was going on. He panicked. Almost instantaneously, he channeled his fear into the ring and somehow managed to make time move again.
That was when a young hijabi (girl with Islamic headscarf) approached him and asked to see Damian's ring. Still in a half-panicked state, Day didn't refuse the girl and showed her his ring. The girl studied it, then proudly announced she'd found another member of the 99. No matter how much Damian fought and retaliated, the girl and her companions dragged Damian and Dick off to the Seville Institute for Ninety Nine Steps. There, everything was explained to them: Damian's ring held a Noor Stone inside it, and for reasons beyond Damian's comprehension, he alone could unlock its power and use it for whatever purposes he wished. Only ninety-eight other people shared his power - and the Seville Institute was attempting to gather those 99 people together in one group to fight whatever evils plagued their world.
Damian bluntly refused their offer, as well as their help with controlling his new-found power, and even flipped off their leader, Dr. Ramzi Razem, when asked to join the ranks of the 99. Needless to say, his first meeting with the "ninety-eight misfits and their stupid leader" didn't end well. Only Dick's charisma and natural ability to smooth over tension saved Day from starting an international incident---especially once he explained he got the ring from his grandfather, Ra's Al'Ghul. As it stood, the 99 were on incredibly good terms with the Leader of the League of Assassins. Considering Damian had legally disowned his grandfather - as well as his title within the League of Assassins - this really couldn't end well for either party.
Once they returned to the States, Dick asked Damian his course of action--and if he should tell Bruce about the events that happened. Damian balked - no way was Bruce going to hear about this - and insisted that he'd remain as Robin in Gotham. No way was the 99 going to drag him back to Spain as a member of a weird superhero group.
So against all odds, Damian spent the next four years in Gotham City. He'd enrolled himself in Gotham Academy - one of the more prestigious high schools in the area - and continued life as normal. Somewhere along the way, he and a bunch of fellow "sidekicks" or kid superheroes decided to form Young Justice and take on missions that other superhero teams couldn't handle, be it lack of time/lack of preparation/sheer inability to handle it.
Day knows he can handle his dual life just fine: he's been able to juggle schoolwork, an awkward family life with Bruce, Dick, and Tim, and a superhero team without many problems. It's the 99 he can't handle - and whether he realizes it or not, he's not going to be able to resist their sirens' call for much longer.
Personality: No longer a bratty ninja, Damian's grown up a lot in the past six years. Upon first glance, he's a pretty arrogant (and slightly indifferent) guy who doesn't think twice before rushing into battle. Yet there's definitely a lot more to Damian than a Middle-Eastern teenager who's spent the last six years of his life in the States. It's not as hard to find as it used to be, but Damian has a huge heart hidden beneath his snark. If someone he loves is in danger, Damian literally drops everything to save them, be it a supervillain's kidnapping or an algebra test next period.
Of course, that doesn't mean that he won't tease his loved ones. It's said that the more Damian loves someone, the more he'll playfully tease her and try his hardest to get a reaction out of her. (There is one genuine exception to this rule: Tim Drake. Damian's conceded that Tim has good taste in books/movies/entertainment, but he still hasn't fully accepted Tim as an equal.) Human relationships are no longer foreign to Damian, and he knows how to interact with people to a certain extent. Relationships - moreso than expertise and training - are something that matters to Damian, and it shows. However, he's more for the quality of a relationship than the quantity, so he tends to seal himself off if he believes he's made enough good friends to last him a while.
He's also incredibly smart for his age. Even though he's attending a regular private high school with his peers, he doesn't really need it thanks to his mother's homeschooling and the efforts of various assassins growing up. He's got a more sophisticated vocabulary and the knowledge of someone much older than he; of course, by now, he's got a better grasp on what that knowledge means. And, as he puts it, he likes school. It's a chance to make friends and actually talk to people his own age. (It's a far cry from his ten year old self, who legitimately did not get the point of playing in the Children's Museum of Gotham.)
Surprisingly, Damian's also a giant geek. He's obsessed with Star Trek, Pokemon, Steampunk comics, and pretty much everything nerd-related. Fluent in anime, comics, most YA novels, and the like, Day's pretty comfortable with who he is and especially how much he loves comics. He's even attempted to write one or two of his own, though he'll never admit it in public.
To put it bluntly, the person Damian was at 10 years old... embarrasses the person Damian currently is. He's lost most of the formality, the frustration towards the world, and most of his lingering social issues. Without meaning to, Damian absorbed a lot of personality traits from his mentor Dick Grayson - namely, Dick's love for witty banter and Dick's cheery nature - but also retained his "essence," if you will. For instance, he doesn't tolerate bad jokes and tends to be unimpressed pretty easily. Even after all these years, he still can't take a joke when it's aimed at him.
At this point, it's pretty obvious Damian's not ready for his father's mantle: he has a team to lead, not to mention a team he'll eventually join some day "when he's ready" and a whole life ahead of him before he can ever take the cowl. And even though Damian doesn't want to admit it, he's become more social and outgoing... and just maybe, he's too cheerful to ever take on the role of the Dark Knight.
Abilities:
Always Enough Time: Specifically, Damian has the ability to stop time altogether. As Hafiz the Preserver, Damian can permanently stop time in its tracks; while in this state, he can still move, think, and act as though nothing's happened. (Only other super-powered people are unaffected by his ability; specifically, other members of the 99 and people who have similar powers over time.)
Not the Typical White Mage: Comes with the territory of being Hafiz the Preserver; merely by touching something (plants, animals, even other humans), Damian can reverse minor and major wounds and restore everything to its natural state.
Injuries? What Injuries?: Additionally, it's difficult to harm Damian; most of his flesh and blood wounds have magically healed themselves in minutes. (He explained this ability to his Young Justice teammates as "him being dumped in a Lazarus Pit"---even if the truth has nothing to do with it.)
Triad Link: Only applicable to other members of the 99. If someone else has a Noor Stone, Damian can form a link with the gembearer and amplify the other person's powers. (Obviously, this power isn't applicable in Animus unless a member from the 99 comes in.) This works best in sets of three, and Damian being Damian, hasn't really taken advantage of the link.
** It should be noted that the first four abilities are powered by his Noor Stone (which is worn around his neck, as he keeps it hidden from sight); without the stone, he's a normal human being.
I Can Has Ninja: Because of his childhood training, Damian knows how to hurt someone in nearly twenty different ways. It's not something easily forgotten - and most of it's muscle memory by now - but he knows how to handle himself in battle. He's mastered most martial arts and the fine art of hurting someone without a single weapon; the latter's come in handy in more ways than one. His preferred weapon in battle, for this reason, is a Japanese katana---though he's learned how to use escrima sticks in a pinch.
Knack for Languages: Damian's fluent in English, Arabic, Farsi, Hindi, and Spanish. He's lost the ability to read/write Mandarin Chinese, but he can understand a conversation in French and Chinese; his language skills are still ridiculous for someone of his age.
Screw this, I'm Driving: Has a pilot's license as well as a driver's license. In addition to being legally old enough to drive, Damian's also got a working knowledge of mechanics and can easily repair cars/the Batmobile/motorbikes on the fly.
