Fandom: Katekyo Hitman Reborn!
Timeline: Post chapter 332, after Tsuna fires his double X-Burner at Enma
History: [Reborn Wiki Link]
Character Personality: Enma is not what one would call the most fortunate of human beings. He's clumsy, bad at school, frequently picked on, and worst of all, he's stuck as the legitimate heir to a mafia family that he wants no part in. At first glance, he isn't too different from Reborn's stellarly fail-tastic protagonist, Sawada Tsuna. Reborn, the man himself, even goes as far as to call Enma "[Tsuna's] equally pathetic friend". But first impressions can indeed be deceiving, and Enma is far more than a simple mirror image of the Vongola Family's heir. While Tsuna seems to have coped with being "pathetic" by becoming open and accepting, Enma takes the opposite approach, closing himself off from the strain of daily life. Some of the first words spoken to him in the series were "Couldn't hear you there....speak up!" As one might have deduced, Enma is a quiet, unassuming boy who has difficulties navigating social situations or speaking up -- or maybe he simply lacks the desire, in most situations, to say much at all. The manner in which Enma confronts decisions drips with avoidance. Despite his inherited position as Boss of the Shimon Family, he has a tendency to let situations sweep him along rather than making decisions and facing them, telling the other members of the family "I don't really care" when asked what he thought about the Vongola Family's request for assistance in guarding Tsuna, or resolving to run away in order to avoid having to assume power within the Shimon Family.
Maybe it's because of his unnatural quietness, or maybe it's because of the gloomy aura that seems to follow him, or maybe it's just because his small frame makes him an easy target -- whatever the reason, Enma is notoriously bully prone, becoming Namimori middle school's new favorite punching bag within a day of his arrival. Nothing much seems to escape Enma's mouth in the heat of the painfully one-sided fights he finds himself entangled in, but beneath the quiet lies a deep resentment for those who hold "power" in Enma's eyes. In a rare moment of talkativeness, he admits to Tsuna that "when humans have power, they use it rashly" -- his dislike for authority even bleeds over into a once budding friendship with Tsuna, who stands poised to become the boss of the most powerful family in the mafia world. Despite Tsuna's belief that, thanks to their share clumsiness and fear of the mafia, he and Enma are able to empathize with one another, Enma sharply tells Tsuna "Don't put me in the same category as you", pointing out that the heir of the Vongola would never be able to empathize with the boss of a weaker family.
The total effect of Enma's stresses has made him an emotionally guarded person. Unlike Tsuna, who is quick to assume friendship with those around him, Enma withholds titles like "friend" until people are able to prove themselves to him - something that seems to require considerable effort on the part of the other party. When trust is (seemingly) won, only then does he find himself willing to emotionally exert himself -- after he feels Tsuna has marked himself as different from other mafioso, Enma makes an attempt to sway the opinion of Suzuki Adelheid, the de facto leader of the Shimon group, and convince her that the Vongola are worth trusting. However, Enma is easily persuaded to keep his guard up, as is evident when Suzuki encourages Enma to further test Tsuna.
The less drastic manifestation of Enma's guarded character is the slightly sarcastic bite that accompanies his responses to some situations. When first asked why he didn't reveal his mafia connections to Tsuna, his answer is "you didn't ask", and in a similar manner, he doesn't seem to hesitate much when presented with the opportunity to snidely correct Tsuna's inability to read the kanji characters for "shukusei" ("Liquidation", the name of Adelheid's disciplinary committee).
As a final note, it's worth pointing out that while Enma is an academic failure, flunking most of his tests (and finding a measure of comfort in the fact that Tsuna is similarly school-stupid), he's most certainly not an unintelligent person. His kanji comprehension skills are apparently at least a small step above Tsuna's, but more importantly he possesses the ability to plan and adapt when necessity dictates, or when he can be assed to do so. It doesn't take him long at all to formulate his grand "pretend to be threatened by the mafia" scheme in order to test Tsuna's friendship, and when Gokudera catches him while he attempts to put said plan into action, Enma is able lie in order to sneak out of the situation and evade suspicion.
After the horrific misunderstanding involving Enma's letter to Tsuna, yet another facet of Enma's personality is revealed in the form of a torrent of pent up anger that explodes during the raid on the Inheritance Ceremony. The quiet, shy Enma who fears the mafia seemingly vanishes into thin air and is replaced by a cold, cocky, down-to-business persona. After activating his own version of Hyper Dying Will Mode he insists on fighting Tsuna and his guardians all at once, claiming that he'll be fine on his own, and that if the other members of his family were to assist him, it would be "much too easy to kill them all". Despite his previous words speaking out against power abuse and human nature, Enma shows little hesitation when it comes to using his abilities to completely decimate Tsuna and co.; on one level, these actions show Enma's dedication to his Family's goals, and the degree to which he believes their revenge is justified, and on the another, it further shows Enma's contempt for the bullied, pushed-around role he's occupied for some time now. When finally armed with power that (he believes) will guarantee him success, a number of his insecurities seem to melt away.
As the conflict between the Vongola and the Shimon Families escalates, it's revealed that Enma has slowly begun to errode emotionally, and at his new canon point he appears to be teetering on the point of a nervous breakdown. After witnessing two of his family members carted off to prison, he discovers that Tsuna's father may very well be responsible for the deaths of his parents and his younger sister, Mami. The revelation, coupled with the defeat and imminent incarceration of another member of the Shimon Family, throws Enma into a frenzy, and he quickly loses much of his former composure. In this state, his anger causes him to disregard Shimon's plans and moves to kill Tsuna himself, declaring that no one has the right to stop him. Ultimately his emotional imbalance leads to his powers wheeling out of control -- his Shimon ring takes over his "weak heart", and as his powers continue to develop, the ring transforms him into a murderous, mindless killing machine.
Ultimately, this is all because of the intense loneliness that Enma's felt since a young age. Unable to make friends outside of his own Famiglia, Tsuna's apparent betrayal led to Enma's anger, his meltdown, and finally to his redemption. Deep down, even as the Shimon ring has taken over him, he still calls out for help, saying that he's lonely, that he wants a friend - Tsuna hears this, and is finally able to snap him out of the ring's control.
Once assured that he is able to truly trust Tsuna, Enma is able to quickly let go of his anger, proving that he is less a cold-hearted killer, and more a reactionary young boy with a lot on his shoulders -- once in a more stable position, he is slightly less gloomy, and good-natured.
Character Abilities: Seemingly clumsy and useless outside of his "Dying Will Mode", once the oddly phallic flame ignites on Enma's forehead, he becomes a veritable swiss army knife of destruction. The flames of the Earth that Enma wields manifest in a gauntlet that allows him to manipulate gravity seemingly effortlessly. In the initial attack on the Vongola's Inheritance Ceremony, Enma uses hand gestures that aren't even as bombastic as Lelouch vi Brittania's to send Tsuna's guardians crashing into various pieces of architecture. Later it is revealed that Enma's abilities also allow him to fly via some sick bastardization of logic and physics.
But with great power comes great responsibility, or in Enma's case, great pain -- at the point in canon from which he was whisked, his powers haven't had the time to marinate properly in his body (the recipe for "Ultimate Shimon Badass" calls for 7 days marination), and thus the overuse of his abilities causes him a considerable amount of pain and renders him unable to kick-ass like a proper little vengeful maniac.
Also it is very likely that Enma possesses passable first-aid knowledge, considering how frequently he finds himself injured. This isn't as cool as smashing people with gravity, but it is a skill worth mentioning since gravity-smashing only gives boo-boos, and does very little to fix them.
Character Weaknesses: Dogs, bullies, the force of gravity, other various and assorted laws of physics, academics, the mafia, pants, sewing needles...basically, Enma isn't too far off when he marks himself as clumsy and hopeless. Anyone or anything that wants to pick on the poor kid probably has a good chance of succeeding. He doesn't particularly seem to do much to help himself in that respect, either -- Enma's low self confidence and generally apathetic approach to everyday life doesn’t seem to help him evade bullying, and his inability to approach a problem head on or make decisions seems to deprive him of the ability to resolve much of anything.
However when pushed far enough, Enma reacts violently, a sign of how he seems to let situations stew and fester until he reaches a breaking point. Once he is angry with an individual, he is cold and aggressive and difficult to appease. Because the Shimon Ring was able to grab a hold of him so easily, it is not a stretch to assume that Enma has a rather weak emotional constitution.
[ SOUL CAMPAIGN SECTION ]
What are the abilities that your character will retain in Soul Campaign?
- Enma will be losing his Dying Will abilities entirely. No gravity crushing, sorry Enma.
- However, his skill with first aid is a learned skill and will most likely carry over un-stifled.
What are the weaknesses that your character will lose or gain in Soul Campaign?
- Enma's weaknesses are mostly emotional - those will stay regardless of the world he's inhabiting.
- His clumsiness, likewise, will most likely remain unchanged.
- Despite being stripped of his powers, Enma has only been able to utilize them for a short time, and he has not yet come to rely on them in his day-to-day life. While he will be irritated at their absence, it would not have a notable effect on his daily life.
Keeping the game’s premise in mind, please give us a brief explanation of your plans for your character in Soul Campaign.
Enma will be coming to Death City after experiencing a lot of emotional turmoil -- while he'll retain most of his memories from his last stay in Death City, I'm interested in further exploring his new-found desire to befriend others and trust them. He'll be coming from a point at which he's been unable to fully explore these desires, and may not even be sure whether he survived his encounter with Tsuna's Double X-Burner. I want to play through his dealing with this uncertainty while trying to readjust to life in Death City once more. Additionally, he will remain rather dubious of Shibusen as a whole, thanks to his former experiences in the city, and I would be interested in seeing whether his new desire to support others will lead to him coming to trust Shibusen more.
[ WEAPON ONLY SECTION ]
Why your character should be a Weapon: Since his last visit to Death City, Enma's soul has undergone certain changes -- while he is still a mafia boss in his own world, and while he still has difficult freely allowing himself to be used by others, he has come to realize he has a desire to forge friendships. While he was consumed by the power of his own ring, Tsuna was able to hear Enma's inner voice saying "save me" and "It's lonely" -- Enma will be arriving in Death City before he is able to consciously confront these desires proactively, but later in his canon this leads to Enma vowing to stand by Tsuna's side and support him regardless.
Thus, I feel that despite Enma's inner reservations, he's developed the ability and the desire to help support someone he trusts to his fullest capacity, which would allow him to take the form of a weapon.
What is your character's Weapon form?:
Enma's weapon form is a
large, rusted gravity gun. Imagine a steampunk portal gun, silvery but slightly banged up, tarnished, and rusted, with gears and cogs visible from the inside that may or may not serve any actual purpose. Like Enma's ability in canon, the gun will give the meister the ability to manipulate gravity to an extent -- for example, a target could be picked up and flung from a certain range, or what-not. The gun is also capable of shooting your standard-issue soul wavelength bullets for damage.
At lower levels of resonation, the meister will be able to utilize Enma to fire a shot that, if it hits the desired target, suspends them in the air for a short period of time.
At mid-levels of resonation, Enma's range will be increased (think 20 meters as opposed to the normal 10), albeit at the tax of the meister's constitution being drained at a quicker rate.
At high levels of resonation, Enma will be able to fire one, multi-shot attack, allowing the meister to effectively pin down multiple targets with Enma's gravity and then attack. However, after using this attack, the resonation levels and the pair's energy levels will be plunged back down to base levels.

[ SAMPLES ]
First Person:
[The communicator switches on to video mode -- potentially by accident, considering that it's sitting precariously atop a stack of books that one certain, rather bruised red-head is fumbling with. He leans in for a moment to grab at a book that's slipping out of the pile, chin bumping again into the communicator.]
[He stops, looks down the hall with a small but ephemeral flicker of determination, checks the stack of books again, and starts on his way]
[The sound of footsteps and the slight shaking of the picture as the communicator wobbles along with Enma and his books as he makes his way to the stairs -- and then, there it is, a small noise, barely audible, but very obviously the mewl of a cat]
Mm?
[Enma stops and looks down -- another mew from the cat that is, presumably, by his feet.]
...Not right now.
[He continues on his way, and by the sound of it, so does the increasingly noisy cat. The picture wobbles again, this time more noticeably as he starts down the stairs.]
I've got cla--
[What must have been the beginning of a step is interrupted by the offended yowling of a now stepped-on cat -- there's a short yelp of surprise from Enma and the communicator and the books go flying as they're dropped, and Enma takes a tumble down the stairs.]
[Rolling, rolling, rolling, and when the device finally hits the bottom of the stairs, one is treated (treated?) to the sight of Enma lying nearby, books scattered around him. Without sitting up, he reaches out, hands finding the communicator. There's some momentary fumbling before the off button is hit and the picture cuts out.]
Third Person:
It wasn't a horrible sensation, feeling your body begin to slowly disintegrate. It was, in the back of Enma's mind, something he knew he deserved. Something that was a necessity if Tsuna-kun was to beat Daemon Spade and save both their families. Deep down, he knew he could trust Tsuna with that. Yeah. It was okay. It hurt a little. Maybe it was scary. But as Enma closed his eyes, all he could see was the heat of the flames and an expanse of vast, cloudless sky.
Yeah. In the end it would be okay, because Tsuna-kun was there.
And then everything went dark. Quiet. Still. Dead wasn't as bad as Enma had imagined, he supposed. Dark, cold, and as his eyes adjusted to the dark, he could see seals, chains, and the soft glow of a television screen. He rubbed his eyes -- everything about this place was hauntingly familiar. He felt his stomach sink, a feeling the looming threat of death had been unable to instill in him.
He stood up, looked around, dusted his pants off, and slowly, slowly, his eyes focused on the screen.
And then images formed in the screen, the figure of a man with an odd tie and red hair. Shibusen, Enma realized as his stomach sank again. He was back at Shibusen which was, in his opinion, a little bit worse than being decidedly dead.
He sighed, rubbed his face with beaten, bandaged hands, and shot an irate look at the recording of Spirit Albarn. He was going to be doing this all over again -- figures life (or lack thereof? Enma couldn't be sure, and he was certain that was something he'd return to think far too hard about in the near future) couldn't give him a break.
