[On the last day, Aiden finally picks up the phone. The exchange is short and blunt, Kerosene breathless and shaking:

"Aiden, thank goodness! Where have you been?!"
"On a trip to Johto. Remember?"
"You... went on a trip without me?" He can't keep the hurt out of his voice. He knows he's far away, but... how could Aiden just leave without him? He knew that Kerosene... he knew what'd happened in the daycare. He knew.
"Uh... yeah." He didn't even sound apologetic!
"I can't believe you'd just leave your own Charmander behind like that!!" Hot, angry words that he had no right saying, but Aiden knew. Aiden knew!!
"Kerosene... you stopped being my Charmander ten years ago." Soft, still confused, vaguely annoyed.

He drops the phone. He can't speak. Can't breathe. Of course Kerosene had wondered, had worried. Of course he knew Aiden didn't really need him, that he was just a burden, a pointless little housepet. He should have known the second that he left for the school. This was just an excuse to send him away. That's all this is. Maybe he'd known that all along. He just never expected to hear it so bluntly.

It feels like a blow to the gut. He feels cold and strangely empty inside. He's no longer Aiden's. He doesn't belong to anyone. He's alone.

He can hear Aiden's voice faintly drifting up from the phone on the floor. What's wrong with you anyway, Kerosene? Your voice sounds a little different. Are you sick? He wants to pick the phone back up, cry and plead to be taken back -- he'll fix whatever's wrong, he'll be that Charizard, just please don't leave him here.

He walks away instead. One hand finds its way to the scratched dogtag hanging from his neck, holds onto it like it's a lifeline, and he simply walks without even knowing where he's going. Where is there to go, now that he's not Aiden's?]
