He'd had a good afternoon, chocolate had not gone admist, smuggled through a letter from his mother after he'd sent her a birthday card which transfigured into a dog and ran around her kitchen table - James's idea.
He took out his favourite mugglebook, and not surprisingly Lord of the Rings was not a favourite with the wizarding world as Remus could just hear Sirius in his ear yelling, "Elves are not that tall" and being unable to read it, but the fact remained he loved the book and the characters, sometimes he wished he could disapear into their lives, like Samwise, or Frodo and see if they could play his life better than he had. He secretly wouldn't of been surprised.
When he realized he'd cast a shadow on someone reading, and backed off a little. "I'm sorry! My mistake--" he began when he saw it Severus and his smile lessened a little. "Accident..."
"Mmmm, yes, of course," Severus replied, turning his attention back to the book in front of him. "I'm beginning to believe that your life has been a series of unfortunate accidents, Lupin," He was unable to prevent the sarcasm from dripping from his voice. "Either that, or, like your friends you are incapable of claiming responsibility for your own actions, and would rather claim that it is all out of your hands and in the hands of some invisible force."
He shoved the hair out of his eyes, and glanced at what Remus was reading, frowning deeply as he recognised the title of the Muggle novel. Well, there was no need to bring up the fact he knew what it was. "Had any luck with the Veritaserum?" he asked almost against his will.
And that was a little harsh. Remus could forgive, it was bad enough that Antonin hurt his feelings every other word, but Severus knew exactly what to say without being so open about it.
He sighed a little, trying to ignore the first comment though it was clear he reacted. "I did...It had me stooped for so long, but after those tips It was so much easier. Slughorn was happier with me"
Severus almost felt bad when he watched the way Remus' face fell, and a frown found it's way there. However, the Gryffindor deserved it, for all the time he'd sat back and let his friends make Severus miserable.
"Slughorn is easy to impress," he replied with a shrug. "If you read something other than that pitiful text he assigns, you'd have a better chance."
