We bought both our older girls cars when they turned sixteen. We bought and owned them. They insured them. When high school days were over and they headed to college, the sale of the car helped with tuition. The girls also had certain stipulations to adhere to in order to drive the car. They were to have jobs to pay the insurance, attend seminary and maintain excellent grades. It worked well for us financially and it was also a big help that I didn't have to cart them here and there since I still had young ones home at the time. The girls were very helpful to me. Here in the Commonwealth of MA insurance rates for teens are exceptionally high. ReLy could never afford to insure herself and we don't have the cash to buy a decent car for her right now. Of course she would love one, but everything isn't always fair around here.

I hope you can be firm. With an attitude like that, I think he should have to put some effort into the things he wants
When my sons reached sixteen, good, old used cars could be had for a few hundred dollars. I bought the cars and they accepted them and paid for gas and insurance and helped with repairs. Some of their friends had fancy new cars, but our kids didn't complain.
