“Mother!” Gwen heard her oldest child before she even saw him. And, judging by the sound of running, Duran was with him. She’d just been on her way to go see them and send their nurse away for the night, anyway. When the children turned the corner, Amhar beamed at her. “We need your help.”

“Oh, do you?” Gwen smiled at both of her boys. She had a feeling they were in the middle of one of their games, and, judging by the way they were both carrying swords, she could only assume they were pretending to be knights. “What can I help you with?”

“We want to fight a dragon!” Duran exclaimed, with all of the enthusiasm his two year old self could muster.

“But we want a reason to fight the dragon,” Amhar continued. “Because we can’t fight dragons just because. That’d be silly.”

Duran nodded his head excitedly. “We need a girl.”

“You need a girl?” Gwen laughed. She had a feeling it was one of those nights where she was going to be a damsel in distress, so her sons could rescue her.

“A fair maiden!” Amhar practically shouted it. “You’re a fair maiden, Mother.”

“Father says so.” Duran agreed.

Gwen might have blushed a little bit at the compliment, even though it hadn’t come directly from Arthur. “I suppose I’m fully qualified to help you, then.”

Amhar grabbed one hand, and Duran grabbed the other. Then they both started leading her toward what they were describing as “the tower,” where, apparently, the dragon would be holding her captive.

“So, you’re going to be kidnapped by a dragon!”

“In a tower!”

“And then we’ll slay the dragon in a fierce battle, and come save you!”

Amhar and Duran both seemed quite satisfied with the plan. Gwen was just glad the boys weren’t insisting on her being in an actual tower this time; they’d found an empty room on the same floor as her and Arthur’s chambers, and the nursery, and were using that as the tower. The dragon, of course, was Amhar’s puppy, who had fallen asleep in front of the “tower.” The boys pushed Gwen into the room that was serving as the tower, and halfway closed the door, then ran off, so when they reached the end of their quest, she’d be able to hear them battle the dragon.

Gwen, in the meantime, played with the dragon, who had woken up from his nap. Being a damsel in distress wasn’t so bad all of the time.
