hang on, why can't you put a div in an inline element? is it broken in some way? seems to look and work fine for me.
i have no earthly clue what an inline style is, or why you should apologize for one. i just wonder, what is the result you want? do you have it? unless you're trying to sell your skills as a web designer, maybe this is enough for what you need?
well.... you have a point. it does work fine. but it's not "valid." and that means it has the potential to break on some browser, or under some conditions. i am not actively trying to sell my skills as a web designer but i DO get/have gotten paid to do web updates and design for a couple people and companies, and i want to do things the right way, and if i got swifter and more skilled at it i could try to get more web design work. that would likely be much more lucrative than copy editing, and i know plenty of artists who need web sites.
Alternately, you can specify display: block; on your a elements.
Mozilla Developer Network has a really nice CSS reference and also documentation/information about several other things, including HTML. *clicks around the site a little* Oh, and they appear to have a set of tutorials called "Learn How to Make Websites", which might be right up your alley?
I'm struggling with this myself now - I have a number of friends who work on CSS / HTML5 and I'm currently reaching out to them for advice. If you'd like, I can share what I find with you. I've also done some work on making sites more touch-friendly without doing specific touch work (don't know if you are interested in that), and can pass that on too.
