I use Freshbooks, but my husband also works for them, so I admit to having a bias.
I asked him to look at your requirements and as far as he knows, Freshbooks wouldn't work for you. There may be ways around some of it, but best to talk to sales instead (he's head of IT). :)
ETA: I use it to track my income/expenses/business accounting. I don't use it to bill my clients.
I don't freelance as much as you, but I have a folder on my harddrive called INVOICES and then within it there are (loose) the invoices that are for projects I'm currently working on but which I have not yet sent to the client (unbilled). There are two other folders within this Invoices folder, one called INVOICES SENT and one called PAYMENT RECEIVED. Each invoice I create has a unique identifier and when I bill the client, the invoice goes into the Sent folder. When I receive payment, I move it to the Received folder. It's easy to see, at a glance, how much money I have coming to me by just doing a preview of the invoices in the sent folder (and since they're dated, I can see when they're outstanding).
I'm not sure if this is helpful in any way, but it's what I do. You could easily do the same in google docs (create a nested folder system), if you want to work in the cloud.
