today i finally got to spend half an hour doing the thing i've been fantasizing about for two years!

it is HARD. in part because i don't actually train handwalking and don't excel at it. and in large part because getting the squares to make noise requires a lot of force. and in part because half an hour of playing around is just not enough time to ( Read more... )

Ahhhhhhh this makes me smile! It sounds and looks so cool! And sweet, like winter music. The ambient noise of it is lovely too.

heisenbug does some composing sometimes -- I'll make sure he sees this.

i'd love that! i have an nyc friend who composes who i've been after for two years, if not more, to help me with this project, and i know she wants to but there are always more urgent things in her life.

Wow... I'm not sure I'd even know where to start on composing for that. It's got such extreme constraints. Only nine notes (assuming they're all different, which I'm not sure of), and playing even one note is a lot of effort. I suspect it wouldn't be possible to control the timing of a note very accurately.

Of course, extreme constraints can be inspiring.

Are you thinking of a solo piece (musically speaking), or having accompaniment?

i think i'll go back before i leave town and film a hop on each square to get clear about the notes.

my intention is that with enough rehearsal, i could control the timing of each note, like any musician.

i really want it to be solo. i know it would be minimal and sparse, but that's appealing to me.

Oh, and I've been meaning to ask what you use for video editing!

nothing in particular -- i use a flipcam, so i usually just use the video editing that's part of flipshare, which allows for only the most basic functions: cutting video, joining two or more videos together, adding background music, and adding a title/or credits. when i made my demo reel last year i used the free (i think?) pinnacle videospin.

also, most of the functions of flipshare you can also do within youtube itself these days.
