So I totally get why everyone is talking about how Obama is our first black president, and how this marks such a difference from the way things were in our country even 50 years ago.  And don't get me wrong,  I'm excited.  And I'm digging the unity thing we've got going on in Chicago today ( Read more... )

I have to agree with you. I'm really tired of people talking about his race. I didn't vote for him because he's black. I voted for him for a whole host of reasons, including but not limited to his amazing ability to speak and to galvanize and inspire his listeners and his forward thinking determination to change the world. I wish we'd pay attention to more of that.

I hope to god he doesn't screw up, though.

He won't screw up!! There is likely to never, ever be a President now or in the future that could ever be seen as having screwed up when compared to the Bush dynasty. ANYTHING is a step in the right direction. But I think he has a very good head on his shoulders and Biden will be a wonderful support. This is a great team. I'm super excited to see how the rest of the world is happy about the election outcome, too!

I'm 100% with you! I think he's going to be awesome! But the bar has been set pretty damn high for the poor man. Still, I'm very excited for things to come!

Yeah, there's definitely a whole host of expectations from him. It has GOT to be pretty damn overwhelming for him. I hope he justifies the way Americans voted for him (and I think he will, as long as people realize he's just human and he might make some mistakes from time to time).

About the whole black thing, I agree that it shouldn't be the only focus, but we have to admit, this is a big turning point for African-Americans. America has elected its first black President, and people are still reeling from it. I think it makes sense that everyone keeps highlighting the color of his skin, but they should not let that blind them from everything else. It's one aspect of him, of course, but it's not ALL of him.

Yeah, interesting that no ones mentioning he's actually biracial. Isn't he half white?

Speaking from the conservative wing of American thought, I'd like to go on the record in stating that Obama's skin color makes little difference to me. I will happily vote for someone of any color, race, gender, etc. who shares my love of Constitutional Democracy. I find it unfortuate that there still exists patches of racial crazies out there sputtering their filth. They present an intellectual absurdity that is on-par with the Social Darwinists who promoted the Holocaust ( ... )
