I need to ponder this, but Job seems like a candidate.techgrrlNovember 6 2008, 04:09:23 UTC
God let satan torture him for decades with boils, diseases, and torments galore, all on a bet with the devil that he would stay faithful to god. Modern christians see this as an example of a reason to be faithful, but when I read it, I think, who could be faithful to a god like that?

The whole God/Satan/Job thing seems more than a bit infantile. I learned in less than 37 years that it's easier to re-arrange the planets or re-marry the greek gods more suitably, than it is to get one person to change their mind about God, even if the God they've been presented with has the worst--case scenario of a relationship with humans, in nearly every possible way. (I've only read one bit of fiction that had a worst god/human interaction, and that was two humans had a child that so scared God that he left the universe.)
