Hanna was somehow keeping it together.
She had visited her mom already in the prison. The guards even made Ashley back off when she tried to reach out for Hanna's hand. They talked about mundane things mostly...like the black tie gala thingy for the Rosewood Library. Hanna usually didn't care about such things, but she thought it could be fun to go with her mom. She was a little bit in denial when Ashley couldn't promise Hanna she'd be available for that. Hanna didn't want to believe that. Surely they'd find some evidence to get her out of here.
It wasn't until Spencer dropped by the house later that evening that Hanna had to listen to some hard truths.
She'd been signing a few checks to pay the bills, forging her mother's signature to get it done. That was still a useful skill to have. It's not like her dad was taking the initiative to take care of things a parent was supposed to take care of.
"What are you doing?" Spencer asked gently as she walked over to the kitchen table where Hanna had been writing checks out.
"I just don't want my mom to come home to no lights, no hot water..." Hanna trailed off, going back to forging checks.
"Hanna," Spencer said quietly. "I need you to hear me."
Hanna knew the look on Spencer's face. "Okay, quit making that face. It's your bad news face."
When Spencer didn't answer, Hanna knew why. With a heavy sigh, she said, "My mom's not coming home anytime soon, is she?"
"I overheard my mom talking strategy with my dad," Spencer began, referring to Ashley's case. "And from what it sounds like, it'd probably be better if she had done it."
Hanna continued listening, though she wished she didn't have to.
"Your mom and Wilden had a really tense history," Spencer continued. "Prove that he threatened her, and they could go for voluntary manslaughter...which is twenty years. And if not, then...it's first degree murder."
"And my mom could spend the rest of her life in jail?" Hanna finished.
She could feel herself about to crumble. Even Spencer's voice was shaking with sadness.
"Worse. Maybe," Spencer said somberly. "It's just how bad it looks."
"No," Hanna said tearfully. "That's how bad 'A' made it look."
The tears turned to quiet sobs as Spencer wrapped her into a big hug.
There really wasn't much that could be said.
Hanna couldn't even imagine her life without her mother. It was just too much.
