Just prior to exploring abandonments I used to hike rails looking for odd forgotten places. Its amazing how remote and desolate stretches of railroads tracks can seem, even when they run through urban centers.

Or how many large industrial complexes are found along the rails out in the middle of nowhere. Mines, grain or cement silos, lumber mills, etc. I rode a Amtrak train that ran through the middle of an operating paper mill. What a great sight.

Also how much traffic what looks like an abandoned section of track might really have.

Wonderful pictures, I have a thing for old trains. My inlaws own 22 circa '50's trains and run a 5-train sightseeing/winetasting company that I have yet to ride on. We have a little train that goes up and down the island where I live that I take occasionally just for the heck of it.
