Hm... now pleased with last post so will throw another question into the air and see if anybody catches it- this is fun!- and I'm feeling naughty now.

The author, the writer, as a function... is a storyteller, an entertainer- yes? no? Or an activist, a political mover with the power to change things.

If you really want the power to change the world, or least your locality, you need wide readership. In other words, become a journalist for a widely circulated newspaper or website.

TO be influential depends on how many read your works, what those works are and how influential your readers are. If you have only teen readers, but there are literally millions of them, your influence will be greater than if you have only highbrow readers, but there are mere dozens of them.

I suppose a large part of a writer's influence is one of entertainment, but even a story that has no moral purpose may end up influencing people considerably.
