visage \VIZ-ij\, noun:
1. The face, countenance, or look of a person or an animal; -- chiefly applied to the human face.
2. Look; appearance; aspect.

Rose walked into the console room and found the Doctor peering at something thoughtfully. She didn’t want to disturb him, and sat down quietly, waiting for him to finish.

A few minutes later, to her surprise, he glanced up and said “So, tell me, really, how do I look?”

Rose raised an eyebrow. “Didn’t we already have this conversation? Back on the Sycorax ship? You look fine, what’s the problem?”

He sighed. “I know, I know, I’ve looked in the mirror, I know what I look like, but…how do I look? I don’t know what this face looks like to anyone else, and I’m only just getting used to it, and…” He trailed off, sounding a bit frustrated.

“And…what?” She asked tentatively, confused and slightly concerned.

He shook his head. “I… I don’t know. It’s always different, you know?” He paused. “No, I don’t suppose you do. It’s… it’s a matter of … of aspect, I suppose. Not what color are my eyes, but what do they look like.” He glanced over at her again. “Not making any sense at all, am I?”

She shook her head slowly, wrinkling up her face a bit. “Not much, no. Should I be worried about you?”

He stopped for second and looked at her, almost like the deer caught in the headlights. “Worried? No. Why would you be worried?”

“Well, you seem sort of, I dunno, unsettled. I thought everything was okay?” She eyed him slightly suspiciously despite the fact that he seemed to have calmed down a little.

“Okay? Of course it’s okay. Why wouldn’t it be? Oh!” Rose could see the light dawn on his face. “You mean the regeneration! Yeah, that’s all fine. Done. Finished, hopefully for a good long while to come.”

He smiled at her. “Sorry if I seem a bit off, I just…I don’t know what I look like, to you, or to anyone else. It’s not the same as looking in a mirror and seeing brown hair and brown eyes. I mean, do I seem friendly? Serious? Funny? Unapproachable? If I walk into a room full of people I’ve never met, what will they see in my face? How will it change how they interact with me? Especially since I’m on the young side this time-though not the youngest I’ve ever been.” He stopped pacing and looked at her again. “That’s what I want to know,” he said with a sigh.

Rose studied him for a minute, his frustration and curiosity mixed on his face, accented with a note of dejection. “This is really a big deal for you, isn’t it?”

He nodded, looking at her expectantly.

She wondered for a second, studying him, before she walked over to him, stood on tiptoe, and kissed him on the cheek. “You’re adorable,” she said with a smile and a pat on his arm. “Just adorable.”
