Alice is holding on to Hatter's hand one evening, enjoying the quiet bustle of New York as the sun sets overhead and Hatter hums some Wonderland song under his breath, both content with the silence as they idly window shop and lose themselves in the crowd for a little while, relaxing after a long week. Hatter abruptly sucks in a deep breath and Alice looks up, breaking the silence. "You ok?"

He smiles over at her and drags her over to a store, which draws a weak groan from her lips as he begins examining the hats in the window. She gives up, knowing they're going to be here for awhile, but can't complain as he looks delighted. "D'ya think that'd look good on me?" he asks Alice, eyeing a deep blue velvet fedora that somehow does scream Hatter out to her as she examines it.

Before she can say anything, however, a smooth voice pipes in, "Peter, see, I'm not the only one with good taste in New York."

"If you can call that good taste," a second voice says, obviously struggling to hold in annoyance.

Hatter and Alice turn as one, blinking as a young man with a wide grin and perfectly messy brown hair looks over their shoulders at the hat, flipping a similar black fedora onto his head. "Who are you?" Hatter breathes, a little awestruck. He wonders for a moment if the man's a Wonderlander and Alice is afraid he's going to vocalize anything like that, but he calms down enough to keep his thoughts where they belong-- in his head, to her relief.

"Neal Caffery," he says simply, finally looking at them. "This is my partner, Peter Burke."

"We've gone over this, we're not partners," Peter says-- and Alice can just sense he's FBI by the way he talks and walks, and based on the look in his eyes as he looks at Neal, Neal must be a criminal of some sort, which isn't that comforting?

"David Hatter," her boyfriend says easily, grinning at his fellow hat-enthusiast.

Alice sighs and finishes the chain of introductions, "Alice Hamilton," she nods, smiling a little. Her guard is raised a little more as Neal grins charmingly at her and even Hatter bristles a little, recognizing the smoothness of his fellow con-- his hand quickly wraps around her waist possessively and she leans against him, relieved when Neal's eyes widens and he steps back, quickly ignoring the automatic reflex to flirt and charm the nearest woman. Well, he has some sense, she thinks as Hatter's right fist relaxes.

"We have to go," Peter says, dragging Neal away from the window. "Come back here on your own time, Neal. Dammit, we're late for that meeting," he continues complaining.

Alice and Hatter blink as Neal yells back at them, "Nice to meet you! And David, definitely get that hat!"

"Gotta love New York," Alice says with an amused shake of her head as Hatter turns to look at the fedora once more, a hungry look on his face. She groans. "Come on." She grips him by the sleeve and drags him into the store.
