Yeah, that place creeps me out anyway, it does not seem like a happy place. I assume you read "Nickel and Dimed" by Ehrenreich? She does a section on that, but the worst is Merry Maids Cleaning. I will never, ever them, or a service like that, for precisely that reason. If I'm going to pay someone to clean my house, THEY get the money directly, not the exploitative middleman.

"Nicked and Dimed" was a huge eye-opener, wasn't it? I knew the working class was mistreated, but to have it spelled out like that... :::shudder:::

I'm the same way. Not because I worked there and was treated like shit (although I did work for a company that didn't treat it's employees well...which I'm happy to report that karma bit them in their ass as they went bankrupt and were brought out by another company ( ... )

Trish, I'm totally with you on this. I've read too much about the way they treat their employees, the political causes they align themselves with, and of course there's the "drive the Mom and Pop stores out" factor and the sweatshop factor and the shoddy merchandise factor and and and...

The only time I've been in a Wal-Mart in probably the last 10 years was on my trip to ATL with Bethie last year because we needed to buy groceries for the hotel. I was the guest on the trip, though, so didn't complain or try to prod her into going to a regular grocery store. I did feel pretty dirty spending my money there and don't plan to ever do that again.

I hate Wal-Mart too; rarely do I go.
