personally I am for self built. I a have built serveral systems with out issue. The layouts you have posted here are far from identical. The alienware system has SATA the parts system is still using IDE. The Alien system is making use of sound built into the mother board which will rob from performance while the parts system uses an Audigy2 ZS, which will give better sound. I notice both systems are using the most expsensive AMD chip on the market... Do you really need that much CPU power? It's 800+ for the chip alone. There are less expensive chips that are more than fast enough. Though socket 939 is a good socket format. Anyway my two coppers

It isn't a matter of need, it's a matter of want. I don't want to have to touch this system again for a year or two. I dropped the Alienware to the onboard sound card for price reasons, but really wasn't happy with it like that. As to the joys of self built, I've never had a serious issue. I'm just tired of doing it all the time. I just want it to show up in it's pretty little box.

heh. I like working on hardware...just me I guess. Anyway my box is 3 years old and I Am just now really needing to uprade. Anyway. If you really don't want to build your own then Alien isn't a bad company as I can tell. the laptops seem sorta tempting.
