Character Background:

If you had met Hanna a few years ago, she would've been described as the chubby girl in the background. Considering how she was never that popular in the first place, it was a wonder that Alison DiLaurentis chose her as one of her new best friends. Aria Montgomery, Emily Fields, Spencer Hastings, and Hanna were all her new friends--and no one could ever really figure out why. It just..happened.
While the four stuck throughout the years, her parents weren't as lucky. They divorced, and her father left her mother and Hanna in Rosewood. Alison started pretty much controlling them about everything they did. They decided what was cool and what wasn't. All the secrets that they gave Ali made them 'best friends.' The sad part was, that only Ali knew them all the best. She knew all their secrets and weak points and implied them as a joke.
Throughout all this, Hanna followed Alison, and was worried about anything scandalous or dangerous. She was usually the one who tried to get them to do the right thing in situations. Ali would generally just blow her off and mock her about her weight to make everything better again. When her friends got shocked, Ali would always apologize immediately. Hanna wasn't so easily cheered up though. After 'The Jenna Thing', things started getting more complicated and stressed out. They made an innocent girl blind and never got caught. No one understood why and they were all so confused about it, except for Spencer and Alison.
Along with that deal, Ali tried to help Hanna after finding her binging down a pie at her house. Telling her cry, Ali said there was one way to help.
She helped her throw up. While it being a low point of her life, she tried to stop doing it.
It didn't help that at a sleepover, Ali would disappear while they were all sleeping. They woke up without Spencer and Alison. When Spencer came back, she said that she heard Alison scream.

During the year that she was gone, Aria moved to Iceland. The rest of them just broke apart, and rarely spoke to each other. Hanna started losing more weight, and more proud of herself as a result. After being friends with Mona, the girl that Ali always made fun of.  The both of them replaced Ali's "It Girl" of Rosewood status. Dating the boy of her dreams since Seventh grade, it didn't look like things could honestly get any worse.
Her transformation didn't come without any bad flaws though, the pair got into shoplifting glasses to anything. a year went by until she finally got caught by only glasses. While in the police office, she got her first text from A. Even though Hanna got away without having community service or anything, she started fearing that someone did know what happened.
Assuming it was Alison--the only one who knew it all, it was a shock to get the news that they just found Ali dead. While they had a debate about whether Alison told about the Jenna Thing, Hanna disagreed with the fact that "we made a promise."
Jenna Marshall, the same girl that they made blind came back to Rosewood. Bringing back terrible memories with that, Hanna's mom starts getting involved with Detective Wilden, who was the one who came at Hanna's house about the glasses and one of them people working on Alison's murder. This garters an angry reaction from Hanna, from all the stress piled up on her all of a sudden. Considering that it was originally Hanna's fault that this all actually happened, her mom points this out and Hanna starts despising the Detective on the case of Ali's murder.
A few days later, Hanna goes to a party with her boyfriend, Sean. She planned this to be the day where they would have sex. Bringing Sean to a secluded place, he rejected her offer and asked her what she 'had to prove.' He left her with his jacket while she started crying. Both pissed off and upset, she took the keys from his jacket and left the party in his car.
It was crashed.
Her mother--frustrated that Hanna messed up again, she makes it clear that there was nothing she could do now. Hanna simply just pushed it off as everything being more mature about it than more when the other girls brought it up. Later in the day, her dad that she haven't seen for years came out of nowhere. Mr. Marin, suggesting having dinner with Hanna promptly chose that time to show Isabel and Kate; his fiancée and step-sister. While Kate seemed like the perfect girl, Hanna is annoyed and has a tense relationship with the two of them from the start. By that point, her dad decided to share another small detail; Hanna was going to have to work for Sean's mother's dentist office.  It was the only way that she would get out of trouble and paying off the debt.
Leaving early from the dinner, Hanna heads home. She was later sidetracked again by Spencer's urgent call for her. Hanna agreed to go pick up Spencer and her sister's ex-fiancée to take his drunk butt back to his motel.
While waiting for Spencer and Wren to say their good-byes in the car, she listens to the radio. The broadcaster states a call-out to Hanna Marin from A.
"I don't need you anymore."
When the both of them come home to Spencer's house, they go to her room after finding a broken pot and plant set up on the table. And once again, another message from A.
"IT WON'T BE THAT EASY, BITCHES." And that's where I'm taking her from.

They keep on trying to find out who A is, and who actually killed Ali.
Her mom--soon in debt has Hanna on a budget and later steals from one of her clients.  By the time that happens, Hanna 'finds out' who A is. Shortly after, she was hit by a car in the mid-season finale. Hanna was in the hospital and was confined to a wheelchair for...one episode.

Abilites/Special Powers: She has no powers...other than knowing how to shoplift.

Third-Person Sample: Getting a call from Spencer, Hanna took the chance to leave her dad and his new family. It had everything that he needed; he had a perfect daughter that was nothing like her. The entire dinner that Hanna was prepared for was ruined by listening to Kate's endless stories and trying to laugh along to them. In reality, she was practically saved by Spencer's text in the middle of it all.

Pulling up to the parking lot, she looked over at Spencer and the ex-fiancée noticing her. They didn't talk about her that long; Spencer looked back at Wren. Hanna tapped her fingers against the wheel and looked at the radio. She couldn't really just watch them the entire time they were talking--right? Hell, she didn't even know the guy.
The car was significantly empty from just looking out at the two of them. It sounded like they were having a nice conversation from what she was seeing from inside. What was she missing out on?
The radio finally brought something noise into the silent car.
"And from the next line, this one goes out to Hanna from her friend, A. Here you go Hanna, I don't need you anymore." The song followed it--and Hanna was frozen. Spencer entered the car talking, but Hanna only responded with, "We are so out of our league."

First-Person Sample:

Oh GOD, where am I? [Her voice turns muffled from her hiding her face behind her hands.]
I'm so screwed. They're going to freak out.
[A few minutes pass. Finally, Hanna's voice becomes clearer and she notices the communicator. Her smile turns into a fake cheerful smile.]
Hello. How does this even work..? [She taps it slightly,] Can someone actually explain this?
