It was just another Quidditch game. Nadya loved games and went to as many as she could. She brought Flora with her and they were having a blast. They were going to make a day of it and do dinner and a movie after the game.
She was worried when she saw her mama get hit with the bludger but not too worried. Quidditch is a rough game and she’s seen Pasha take a few hits over the years. It’s terrible but it happens.
It didn’t take long for it to hit her that this was different though. Usually once a player goes down they go on a stretcher (no matter how big or small the injury) and are whisked off to Mungos. As Nadya made her way down, hand in hand with Flora, she noticed it took a while to move Pasha.
And the world suddenly seemed quieter.
By the time she made her way to the locker rooms some poor guy who cleans up was the only one she could find. He awkwardly told her Pasha had just been taken to St. Mungos. Anyone could have seen on his face how bad things were but Nadya couldn’t (or wouldn’t) see it.
She held hands with Flora all the way to Mungos Flora didn't say much but could feel the younger girl's anxiety. Once they got there, they blew past the welcome desk, giving Lily Potter a polite but short hello. She smiled sympathetically but didn’t bother telling them where to go, they knew where trauma was.
While they were trying to get someone to talk to them (they were throwing Katie Weasley’s and Tatiana’s names around but this time it didn’t help), She put her arm around Flora and held her close while they waited. It felt like hours before someone came to talk to her (but she knew it was probably minutes).
Bludger straight to the head.
Dead before she hit the ground.
It happens, but rarely. Just bad luck.
Bad luck. Nadya’s had a lot of that in her life.
It took a while to sink in. Even when people started trickling in.
Aunt Tatiana sobbed in a way that almost penetrated her numbness. Almost.
Even when they took Nadya to see Pasha’s body, it didn’t quite set in. She didn’t say word while looking at Pasha except, “Yes, that’s Anastasyia Utkin.”
