[ trying to make up ]

It's been a week since Danny stormed out of the hut in the middle of the night, just after the Mardi Gras party, and Steve had spent the whole night unable to get a single hour of sleep, staring blankly up at the dark ceiling and trying to figure out exactly when everything had gotten so complicated ( Read more... )

Danny thinks he deserves a medal for his walk to the Compound alone, going that whole mile and change just to pick up breakfast. And not just breakfast, but a hopefully Steve-approved version. He's got hard-boiled eggs, oatmeal, fruit, and just a little bacon and he walked back the whole way with it with a pitcher of juice.

So yeah, he thinks he deserves a medal. He's also exhausted because he's up at dawn to do this and he just knocks lightly on Steve's door, juice on the floor. "Hey," he breathes out. He's sleepy and in his pajamas and his hair is wrecked. "Steve. You awake?"

Steve doesn't know why, but his first instinct is to not say anything at all. He's still trying to figure out a way to broach the subject of having heard what Danny was saying about him in the first place, and really, it would be easier if he could just slip out into the kitchen and make enough breakfast for the both of them and then leave it for Danny before heading out to the porch to keep working.

So instead of answering, he rolls over onto his stomach, sliding one arm underneath the pillow and turning to face away from the door, feigning sleep.

"Okay, then, m'coming in," Danny says, never having stopped when ignored before and he's got a whole group of sisters, brother, and ex's who can vouch for that. He opens the door and crouches to pick up the juice, sliding on top of the covers and setting the tray down in front of him, the juice off to the side. "Hey, Sleeping Beauty," Danny says evenly, brushing a thumb up Steve's spine, tracking every notch of bone. "Wake up."

Danny's touch creates a rippling effect that starts where his thumb traces and slowly circling outwards, and Steve shifts slightly before he can help it, groaning in a way that he hopes sounds like that of a sleepy person being disturbed instead of an obvious sign of sensitivity to the touch. Danny's opening the door brought a little more light into the room, and he stretches, turning his head around to blink his eyes open at Danny.
