Out of the rain.

Out of the rain. I just wanted to get out of the rain. I arrived at the homeless shelter just as they were about to close the doors. Funny, that a city as new as this would still have homeless people living in it. The woman running the facility opened the door to let me in, then took a moment to stare at me. Apparently I looked worse than I thought ( Read more... )

"Because the smallest act of kindness is the most incredible thing in the world." I turned away from the edge of the rooftop, from the city shining away beneath me, from the people of New Metropolis, and faced Dana, slipping my hands into my coat pockets and leaning back against the railing. "Because I can. Because... I want to."

"Sure, I get the hero thing. Killing evil, saving children and puppies. I do get that. But.. why the Private Investigator thing? Why the sidekicks? It's always Team Angel, or Buffy and the 'scoobies'. Why go through all the trouble of having friends when they're just so.."

I pause, lifting my head up to look at him, trying to think of the best way to say this.. I don't, of course.

"..squishy?"

"There's two sides to that question," I said, hopping down off of the balcony and walking around her with my hands in my pockets and my coat swishing softly in the breeze. "I have people who work for me -- and work with me -- for ... several reasons."

I leaned against the wall, next to her, and looked out at the night sky. "The people I work with bring talents to the agency that I lack, sometimes. Insights I lack. They provide a human element for dealing with people who... generally tend to be human, and can be ...a little intimidated by me. And... they want to help. On our own, we're weaker, more easily ignored or defeated ...or killed. As a team, we watch out for each other, strengthen each other, and make a more powerful force for good than we would if we were each working alone. But having friends... friends, and not just co-workers, is ... for its own sake. For my own sake. I need ... humanizing influences. People I can connect to and relate to, otherwise, I'm just a human-looking monster. And ... I... I need them. I like them. ( ... )

I look up to him as he talks, blinking as he mentions the different names of people he's worked with over the years. I don't say it aloud, but the thoughts race through my mind. He can't be with Buffy, and she still doesn't trust him anymore. Fred turned into a monster, Lorne ran off and hasn't been heard from, and Cordy, Wesley, Gunn, and Spike all died in the final battle in Los Angeles. He surrounds himself by such people and then outlive them. It must be.. I don't want to think about it.

Glancing away as he mentions Jimmy and Tara, I nod. "Over-eager puppy dog.. he must have been the guy asking for an interview on my way up here. And Tara? You mentioned her before.. Isn't she..uh, Willow's Tara that was killed a few years back?"

"She's.. she's great."

I hear something in his voice when he talks about her, and I turn to look up at him once more, a soft grin forming on my face. "She must be pretty special.."

No hesitation as I dive over the side of the roof, landing down in the alleyway just a step behind Angel, not pausing a moment before rushing forward towards the figures in the near distance ( ... )
