It had been a few days since I had had Dawn down in my...uh...lair ( Read more... )

Rooftop to rooftop. In the two days since my training session with Angel, this has been my most preferred form of travel. Though I didn't have his gadgets, I've been able to find creative ways to stay above street level, using power poles, street lamps, metro buses and the like to keep myself moving. I've found it to be easier and faster to traverse the city this way, and I've stopped more crime in two nights than I did in two weeks in Cleveland ( ... )

"...Are you evil?"

I pause for a second. This question takes me a little more off-guard than any unexpected attack ever has.

Mainly due to the ridiculous nature of it. I mean really...who ASKS that?

I hold my blade steady, but slowly start sliding backwards. If I can just get to the lip of the manhole, maybe I can leap down into the sewer before she tries anything slice-like.

"Ummm...no. Not evil. Generally pissed off these days? Yeah...but not evil up to this point in my life, thanks for asking."

The situation was tense. I didn't figure she'd lower her weapon when I informed her I wasn't the bad guy, and I was right, and so despite the relative humor here, when you have blades pointing back and forth at each other, tension is usually high.

Then I think of something else she said.

"You're a slayer? Like...uh..."

Oh god what did Dawn say her sister's name was? Uh...Bobbi? Britney? Something completely ridiculous...

"...like...Buffy?!"

"Ummm...no. Not evil."

Well, that's a relief.

Unless he's lying, of course. Which evil people tend to do.. so I'm not entirely convinced. He still has a sword pointed towards me, and my own is trained on him in response. I can tell he's slowly moving away.. perhaps to make me think he's trying to escape, or to actually escape.. either way, I'm not thrilled with letting him go without knowing more.

That's when he drops her name ( ... )

She lowers her blade and steps closer. I'm apprehensive to do the same, but since generally lowering a weapon means the threat is past, I slowly allow my katana to move toward the ground.

I still grip it tight though, just cause things suddenly got more relaxed doesn't mean I won't need it.

"You're not a demon..I'd be able to tell. You must be.. one of the mutants then, right? Like the blue guy with fur I saw on television?"

Blue guy with the...fur? What?

Oh. Wait. Those mutants. The whole Ryker Island thing. Living in a sewer made it hard to get the news, but I wasn't totally in the dark. I had heard snippets here and there, plus I had been aware of this mutant thing. People born with abilities and stuff. Seemed kind of funny to me.

But I guess a lot seems funny when you're a turtle.

"Yes, I'm a mutant...but not like the guy on TV. I'm more of a...uh...mutate than a mutant, if you want to be technical. Crazy chemicals, average turtle, put them together, you get me. I'm sure this makes perfect sense."
