Okay, I know I kinda chickened out with a review this week, but since it did get released today, I figured I could get away with one today, even though it's just an EP.
Okay, so the band that has released, dare I say, one of the best albums of the year, brings us another work to finish the year off. While it's entirety is about 30 minutes, the textures and imagery mastered on these five songs only prove that this has been their year to make a profound mark on experimental music.
Fall Be Kind isn't as harmonic as its predecessor, Merriweather Post Pavilion, but it continues on that same accord with wondrous overtures spanning the seasons. And despite its compact length, it still manages to bundle some amazing technique that has been more of a trademark for Panda Bear and Co. As far as EP standards go, they seem to have successfully given the public a something more substantial than others. The only other EP that seemed comparable is possibly Bon Iver's Blood Bank EP that was released this past February.
The highlight has to What Would I Want? Sky with its lush tone and the most striking harmonies on the EP, it reinforces the approach that this band takes whenever they're in the studio, cranking out tunes that collide simpler pleasures with complex and jarring sounds that make you feel safe and aware at the same time. The contrasts are only the beginning. The only song that reminds me the most of MPP is On the Highway with its Beach Boys like quality and distinct Panda Bear vocals, makes it more alluring. Seven albums into their career and they're still taking chances.
