[WBB Fanmix] Already Dreaming East - A GenKill fanmix

Nov 05, 2010 11:25

Okay okay okay! I am clearly too excited about posting this to wait much longer. I've only ever done one big bang fanmix before, and that was for my own story, so this has been a real treat in so many ways. (Also, guys, I am stupid in love with this mix. One song keeps making me cry, so naturally it's been on repeat for a while. Read the fic and listen to the mix and guess which one it is.)

Ahem. Okay. Here's the more composed version I put together last night.

eudaimon has written an incredible story, and you all should read it. It is moving, true and yeah, deeply sexy. I have a fundamental love of road trips and post-war stories, so obviously "To a Place Inside Where There Is Joy" is right up my alley. The premise may seem simple, but homecomings are always more than we bargain for, and should be.
eudaimon writes whole people, or at least real people working to be whole, with such a gorgeous touch. This isn't just about Brad and Nate, though, and it isn't just about the road. There are stories from Band of Brothers, The Pacific and American Idiot also told, and they both stand alone and illuminate the larger arc in their own ways.

I wanted to make a mix that was as much about the journey as the characters. Some of these are state-of-mind songs, while others are telling stories of their own. I hope it's a worthy complement to the story.

1) Speech - Oliver Wendell Holmes
In our youths, our hearts were touched with fire.

2) My Mind Is Ramblin' - The Black Keys
Oh tell me, tell me
What must I do
Be the right way

3) Go Places - The New Pornographers
Yes a heart should always go one step too far

4) If You Asked Me To - Celine Dion
No shame, no regrets. Ray Person would absolutely sing this song.

5) You Shook Me (live) - Led Zeppelin
You shook me so hard baby,
Baby baby please come home

6) War Is Over (Goodbye California) - John Lee Hooker
Well the Greyhound brought me here
Highway 51 gonna carry me away

7) Lay Down Your Arms - Flowers From the Man Who Shot Your Cousin
Don't tell me I don't have no secrets
There's still a place I want to be

8) Carried Home - Iron & Wine
The broken window and the pretty blue sky
And cold water for my swollen black eye

9) Time Is A Lion - Joe Henry
Men become old when their hurt becomes need, but
Time is a lover and your time is young

10) Love Song - Tori Amos
Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am
Home again

11) Heathen's Kiss - Horse Feathers
Tell me where you've gone, speak softly
Tell me where you've gone, and what you've done

12) T.L.S. - Mr. Gnome
I like the way it feels when I'm with you

13) Get Over Here - The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
I'm down on the floor
I'm ready to go

14) I Dream an Old Lover - Jeffrey Foucault
As memory and the sea are deep
Inside our blue and nameless blood

15) Today's Undertaking - M. Ward
He said go build a song
Forty heartbeats long
And sacrifice it to your love

16) Ithaca - Redbird
On our way out, we shed our certainties like clothes

17) None But Shining Hours - The Books
Following the line of the tide reclining
Living on the fat of the sweet sun shining

18) Sea Fever - Kris Delmhorst
I must go down, I must go down
For the call of the running tide

19) One Last Panoramic - Calexico
