We bid a very fond farewell to rahaeli last week, who started working for LiveJournal back in January 2003 when the LJ staff consisted of just a few people. We're sending out huge thanks for all of her work and contributions, and best of luck in her future as an author. You can keep track of her writing career at mccuneblog. We'll miss you, D!

I would expect that since Harry Potter is a famous child character it is the artist's responsibility to aleviate all doubt that the character they are rendering is above the age of minority.

When any doubt exists the default assumption is that a child character would remain a child.

If we're talking about legal responsibility, that is.

well, since it's famous, then the person who was banned for the fred x george picture suffered wrongly since they weren't minors in the end of the series

I believe that the artist admitted that one of the brothers was wearing a school tie. Strongly suggesting that he was a minor.

I think that's an assumption that they'd have to make & it's an assumption I don't really feel safe with - the use of school ties may also be because the readers are used to house colours, that's how a lot of us represent the characters, that's also why some people spend so much money paying for house ties, scarves, etc. I think it's natural that it'd still be stuck in the art whether or not the characters were minors.

And one can argue that that's exactly why it's important for companies like SA to take a stand on behalf of their users, instead of playing it safe and caving at the first sign that some nutter somewhere might be offended.

They have no obligation to do so, of course. They don't want to be shut down and thrown in prison. But as a fairly sizable and well-known corporate entity-especially after all that money they squeezed out of people for permanent accounts-they're in a much better position to do something than any of us would be on our own.

The Internet needs safe places for free expression, and people who are willing to fight for it when necessary. And if SA isn't going to provide either, then I see no reason to give them money.

Add that to the fact that they are going to be adding a "report abuse" button to all posts from now on...

WHAT?

The clear solution to this is to abuse the abuse button. Report everything. everything.
