Hey, LJ staff, no word on you lot introducing a new ~driving revenue~ script that redirects people's links through outboundlink.net AGAIN? I would like an explanation and why does it affect EVERY LINK EVER on EVERY LJ PAGE EVER on only HOVERING the damn link? I'm confused, and it scared the hell out of me as I had no idea what were all those scripts loaded on my flist, I thought someone had spammed a community.
I've already blocked it obvs. PEOPLE, GET FIREFOX AND ADBLOCK AND NOSCRIPT, THEN GO AROUND BLOCKING EVERY NON-USEFUL LJ SCRIPT. There you go, done my bit!

Oh holy fucking shit. Not again. But they *did* warn us they would do it to us again "possibly" in the "near future", the slimeballs. What can I tell you? THANK YOU GOD THAT I LEFT LIVEJOURNAL AFTER THE FIRST ROUND OF THIS BULLSHIT, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
I'm going to be an elistist fuckwit Dreamwidth snob now, if ya'll'll excuse me:

That was very awake of you, thanks. But if you check my journals on LJ (marahmarie, anti-aol) you'll see there's just one post left on each welcoming everyone to my new homes on the web here and here. I know it's confusing, but I wanted to keep my log-ins to LJ and my journals themselves simply to redirect people to my new homes, since they're not showing up much in Google just yet. So yeah, I'm happy that, as far as I'm concerned, I've already "left" LJ - in my heart and my mind, I did. If I choose to keep just one foot in the door for convenience's sake, so what?
Re: Screw LiveGermBall. Come join us at Dreamwidth!anti_aolApril 17 2010, 17:05:27 UTC
Your point is? I'm not advocating for Dreamwidth, just saying I like it so come join me there. Problem? Is how I worded my comment, which I believe seems much more incendiary to you than it actually is because you're viewing it more emotionally than rationally, mentioned in that linked-to page as some big no-no on my part? Was I supposed to know of the existence of that page and read that page top to bottom before posting the comment? Why do you take issue with it? I am not acting as an official mouthpiece for DW nor would I like to, since I'm not and can never be one of those rah-rah types. If you're going to chase me around in comment sections all over LJ (you're doing it to me on DW too unless the name and user icon I see above your comment here is a heck of a lot more popular than I thought) then I'm afraid I'm going to have to do something about it.

Also, if you want to be really anal about this, you're still wrong, if indeed you're telling me that "I did it wrong", since I didn't. Here, from your linked-to page, it says:
"We'd like to be very clear that the creation of Dreamwidth is not a reaction to any particular LiveJournal decision. We're building Dreamwidth out of idealism, not out of dissatisfaction or disgruntlement."
Well, good for them, so they didn't build it over their allergic reaction to LJ. But I joined it over an allergic reaction to LJ and I would not have joined it otherwise. Are you going to tell me that that page tells me not to tell people so? At that point, we can start fighting over free speech issues, because that's exactly where this is going.
"But please avoid the temptation to dichotomize.Surely they are not telling me to STFU, are they

I just read the page after seeing these comments and to me it strikes me that they don't actually demand anything (the word 'please' is in there often, so it's seems more like a request to me), and that the whole idea is most likely to cover their own butts, so that no one can accuse them of sending their Dreamwidth minions out to bash LJ or any other service at their suggestion.
I wouldn't worry about it. I'll continue to love DW and say what I want about it (and about LJ.)

I'm not worried about it, though, checking over my posts on DW now, I can see I've clearly violated DW's Code of Conduct several times, since I was unaware there was any Code of Conduct. Even if I had been made aware of it, it would have stultified me, made me edit myself and curbed my free speech in order to not piss off any of the DW overlords or staff, and that in itself is one depressing thought (that I was not allowed to write, or that I would be automatically shunned for writing, what I wrote). I'm in a state of shock, plus now I feel like I did something wrong, but at the time I had no idea that this Code of Conduct even existed.
Re: Screw LiveGermBall. Come join us at Dreamwidth!foxfirefeyApril 17 2010, 19:37:06 UTC
That Code of Conduct is more...advocacy guidelines for volunteers such as myself. It's not any kind of Terms of Service (that is, you won't be kicked off the service or shunned) for "breaking" it, and it's not binding in anyway, as you've noted. There's no reason you would have seen it before now--it's not prominently featured to users, although I think it's been linked to from dw_news in turbulent times past. Heck, there are even volunteers don't follow all those guidelines, either, and nobody puts them in the stocks. So, no, you don't have to feel like you did something wrong, or curb yourself if you don't want to. Nothing is going to happen to you; the politeness police have no powers besides requests.
At the same time, yes, comments like that are going to make some DW folks wince, just because we know that it's the kind of thing fuels impressions that Dreamwidth is only for people angry at or who hate LJ. That comment from pikabot is a kind of call-and-response pattern we see over and over (aka, "DW is great and LJ sucks" to "why

I don't want my original comment in this thread to misrepresent me but I'm thinking it did, so: I don't hate LJ. That's the funny thing. I made more friends on LJ, had more fun, and achieved more crazy things that I just never thought in my life I could achieve on a simple journaling site than I ever thought possible. Like learning how to code in HTML, CSS, and a tiny bit of s2/Perl? Those were "achievements" to me that were only possible because I felt I need to learn all that to keep my journals at their underlying-code best

The driving revenue script is designed to add our affiliate ID to any outbound link that doesn't have one. This should not affect anyone, and is a transparent process. The last time we tried this the process did not have enough testing. We believe it's been thoroughly tested and works correctly now. If it's causing some sort of a problem, please open a support ticket so we can notify our engineers.

Inviting people to DW is not the same as poking at LJ.
