At long last, we're pleased to announce a new feature. Now, in journal and community entries, there's a button you can click to show the author you liked their entry.
I would much rather someone takes the time to write a proper answer, even if it's just 'cool post' than to spastically click the heart button. Because there's no thought involved in doing it, the feedback is, essentially, meaningless.

What do you mean? wicked_inque is my real name! LOL
Seriously though, I totally get what you're saying. The reason I'm here is because it's not Facebook. There still is dialogue between people, even if it is brief. (I really don't get the OP comment about short posts making them 'feel awkward'. I've never had a friend comment to me, and been like, 'Oh man...I wish they wouldn't have taken the time to say anything!'). I would much rather someone write even two words to me, than just click 'like'. At least I know whatever I wrote was actually read, and whoever didn't just breeze through and like everything that was new on their friends feed.
Hell, half the time, I think people click a 'like' button, just because people can't resist pushing a button. ~_^
Give it time, my friend. Soon, this is going to be 'LiveJournal, brought to you by Facebook'.

And they'll decide for us what we see in our feeds, as facebook does. Then of course there's the instagram debacle where I just need to delete that account cuz you can't sort the feed chronologically at all.
Tech sites don't listen to the user base. They just wanna all be the same.
Please don't make LiveJournal look any more like Facebook. If I wanted people to be able to "Like" my messages I would be over there.
LiveJournal has become an afterthought for too many people. The best example of that is people who link their twitter accounts here but never really visit. It is a way to be here without really doing so.
MY entries and comments are a way of talking to my friends.... and I HOPE they like to talk and chat back. If all I am going to get is stupid little 'likes' hearts or something, then my life will cease!!!
OH PLEASE my DEAR DEAR LJ FRIENDS, Alive and kicking and moaning and groaning and laughing and cackling along with me
Please do not make LJ like FB. It is a very different platform. If you must add this feature, then please make it so that anyone can opt out for their LJ.
Making the feature so that anyone who doesn't want it can opt out of it for their LJ is a good idea. Offering a lot of different features is great for people who want a lot of different features, but making many of them optional is great for people who are more selective. Then each person can have as many or as few features as they want.
You know, I don't think that's a good idea, either. If you make it optional, then a lot of readers will stop reading the journals that don't have the button, because OMG INCONVEEEEEEENIENT. Give people a chance to be lazy, and a LOT of them will take it, and abandon anything that requires even a tiny bit of effort.
But surely that should be up to the owner of the specific LJ journal. If I don't want the "like" option and am willing to have people stop reading my journal, that should be my choice.
