Well we really screwed this one up…

For reasons we are still trying to figure out what was supposed to be a well planned attempt to clean up a few journals that were violating LiveJournal's policies that protect minors turned into a total mess. I can only say I’m sorry, explain what we did wrong and what we are doing to correct these problems and explain what we were trying to do but ( Read more... )

As somebody who works with the LJ team, I can definitely say that everybody I talked to is really sorry that we messed up and that it took us a while to get our act together and let you know what's up. We'll try to do better.

While getting your act together, you guys STILL could have posted something like "statement coming soon". LJ wasn't unaware of what was going on.

Yeah, we know how long it took you to get your act together.

Next time, come to us BEFORE cnet. We're not cool with sloppy seconds/thirds.

Maybe you should had considered that before going to another site and accusing CNet of bias when they could only work with the materials they gathered from your PR people and site users willing to talk with them. I really think you and other LJ staffers need to take a basic journalism 101 course.

As a journalism major, IAWTC. And I'm sure friends of mine in the PR track could examine what's been said in the various outlets and point out the utter screw-ups LJ has made as a corporate entity, let alone one claiming to foster "community."

I went into some detail with this response. Feel free to chime in with your own suggestions.

Can you tell us why it took so long for anyone to make a post like this explaining what had happened & apologising for it? Because I think it was pretty clear not long after all this started that LJ/6A had really, really fucked up with this.

I mean, don't get me wrong. I would guarantee that at least 99.99% of fandom does not support the kinds of things that these journals have been deleted for, plus many are survivors of these kinds of crimes, and said 99.99% of fandom would be fully behind the suspension of communities & journals that encourage those activities, but come on... suspending a Spanish-speaking Lolita discussion community? What I'd love to know is what the hell your criteria was for making these decisions. Obviously you didn't look even a tiny bit past the community names & user interests or you'd know that a lot of these communities & journals didn't deserve even a shred of your attention when it came to making selections for this rash of suspensions!

Thank you for addressing this. In the future, we would appreciate Abuse people actually *reading* the journals/communities in question before suspending them.

If you suspend by keyword, you'll get this fiasco again and again.

Nipplegate didn't teach you anything about how vocal LJ users can be?

In most companies, policies and procedures for emergency situations are worked out well in advance, on the basis that hopefully they'll never need to be used. I expected more from you, particularly given last year's fiasco.

No bloody kidding. Maybe this is an annual event. I wonder what the target will be next year-- how about everyone with "reading" as an interest? Who knows WTF we could all be reading, dude.
