Reading DH again, for the first time

For the first time since -- well, the first time, really -- we're going through DH in the reading groups again with fresh eyes. And my perspective on a lot of things has changed greatly since I first closed the chapter on that crazy first reading group we did, the book's pages still perfect and crisp in our hands ( Read more... )

Oh you're good. I still haven't forgiven Dumbledore for what he did. I've mellowed (a little) so I understand why he did it, but urgh I still get so angry at him. Snape I felt really sorry for after first reading the book. Now I've moved back towards my former feelings of 'complex and revolting and interesting and brave' which is a much happier place, haha.

I'm loving this RG as well. It's such an interesting book to delve into.

I was never super upset with Dumbledore. I've always adored him because he reminded me of my Grandaddy so I just held onto hope that he really was acting in Harry's best interests. I believe he never planned on loving Harry like he did though. The only time I was really doubting him was on Harry's walk into the forest. I was in tears thinking Harry was going to die and I couldn't fathom this man that I loved so much raising Harry like a pig for slaughter. That's why I love King's Cross so much. When he says, "Harry, you wonderful boy. You brave, brave man," I just tear up. I feel every ounce of his love for Harry there. Yes, he was a chessmaster and he was most definitely manipulative, but he acted out of love so I can forgive that.

As for Snape, I will never completely soften. I can understand his pain and admire his bravery, but he was still a jackass. Aside from treating Harry like dirt because he was James' son, he was horrible to my Neville. How can you be horrible to Neville? That's just unforgivable in my book.

I thought Dumbledore in book 7 was very good. Of course he had had to keep things from Harry (and others), we needed all Dumbledore's back story in the final book. I was on the fence sooooooooooooo many times with Snape for six books. But for me, he redeemed himself in book 7, and I definately gained a understanding of him and his motives - particularly in "The Prince's Tale". I would even say .... shock! horror! .... that I actually like him. He's nowhere near in being my favourite character, but he definately went up in my estimation. Yes Jules, he was horrible to "my Neville" but I reckon he was bitter, wishing that Neville has been "the chosen one" over Harry. If so, Lily would still be alive. OK, still married to James, but still alive .... ;)

You think Snape is less of a git? Don't go over to the dark side! Snape is a horrible, horrible man. I think you should read it again - maybe your mind will change back. ;)
