Nick Hornby, author, High Fidelity, Slam, (among others)
"Yes, yes, I know. It's easier to download music, and probably cheaper. But what's playing on your favourite download store when you walk into it? Nothing, that's what. I didn't see this video, but I read this quote, and it made my heart warm before bed.

Okay, I just watched the video. I love that place. I could have easily spent two paychecks there, given about six hours and two cups of some brand of sweet coffee.

I've been there. It's no Jerry's.

Jerry's is just vinyl, just used, and has little to no hip hop, electronic music, or white label releases. Amoeba not only has shit that is out of print and/or impossible to find anyplace else, it has it on all formats, and often used and in good condition. Jerry's is a nice record store. This place is a music mecca. My only qualm with Amoeba is that it is intimidatingly big, but that is part of its draw. Ultimately, though, it's kind of silly to even compare the two, because they serve completely different purposes. It's an apples and oranges situation.

I actually like Paul's a lot better than Jerry's, and since we're appreciating music stores, I found a place in L.A. called Freakbeat Records, and Marie hipped me to a place in Louisville called ear X-tacy, both of which I liked more than Amoeba or Jerry's. I think that the Freakbeat place is the way that I would lay out a music store if I owned one; it combined a lot of good elements.

It's funny, because the second I posted that I remembered all the good stuff I got at Amoeba. I think I just made the knee jerk Pittsburgher response.
