((OOC: Ignore, this is for Melinda's biography/background information))

Name: Melinda Ophelia Bobbin, or Mel to a very, very select few.
Gender: female
Date of birth: June 30th, 1979
Year: 6th
House: Slytherin
Blood status: Pureblood

Physical characteristics: Tall and willowy, Melinda clocks in at 5 feet and 7 inches. She has light green eyes and long, silky light brown hair. She generally wears her hair wavy, but has been known to use a straightening charm on it as well. She’s not hugely in to wearing makeup, but will put on eyeliner and lip gloss when she’s bored.. which is usually.

Melinda likes pretty things like jewelry and scarves. She’s delicate and feminine in both looks and dress, favouring floaty skirts and cute tops over jeans and tshirts. She does own such items for lounging about the house or dorm room, however.

Background information:
Potions, potions, and more potions. Any Slytherin born under a water sign will excel at potions, and the Cancer Slytherin is no exception. The leadership ability and the lofty dreams of Cancer will also be emphasized; as will loyalty (directed for the most part to one's House). Slytherins born under the sign of Cancer will be more hard-shelled and less sentimental than other Cancers, but don't be fooled by their bossy, efficient exteriors. On the inside they are soft and needy, and they learn from a young age to hide this well. Slytherins born under water signs have another thing in common with each other: keen insight into what makes other people tick. These Slytherins are good at manipulating other people's emotions, and good as well at quickly learning the hidden stories behind the otherwise inexplicable actions of acquaintances. They never forget a cut or a kindness, so it is best to stay on their good side unless you want an obsessive, vindictive enemy.
Blurb taken from Harry Potter Astrology

Melinda Ophelia Bobbin was born to Malcolm and Miranda Bobbin on the last day of June in 1979. Mirandra was a socialite and Malcolm is the owner of a successful apothecary business which he inherited from his father and aunt. The family live in Bath.

Melinda was not raised in a happy household. Malcolm frequently “works late” and openly had affairs with young, attractive women. Her father is the type of man who uses his wealth and success as a tool to impress and intimidate people. He thinks of his daughter as a pretty little doll and nothing more. His wife married him for love and not money. Most of their friends probably think Miranda stays with Malcolm for his money (and it probably doesn’t hurt,) but she honestly could never think of leaving him. His affairs hurt and anger her intensely, and she has a tendency to take out her anger on her daughter by either ignoring her or berating her.

Thus Melinda grew up in a household where she was ignored and neglected by both parents most of the time, unless her mother was telling her off for something. Not an environment conducive for developing good social skills. She’s incredibly shy but far too proud to show it. She generally doesn’t know how to deal with affection (see the section on her cousins for details on this,) and will often draw attention to other people in order to keep the focus off of herself.

One positive influence in Melinda’s life was her Great Aunt Evelyn Bobbin. Evelyn founded the Bobbin Apothecary business as a young woman with her brother (Melinda’s grandfather.) She had the talent with Potions and plants, while her brother was the business end. Evelyn died when Melinda was eight, but Mel has memories of spending time in the Bath branch of the store with her. Evelyn was always kind to her little niece and instilled a love of Potions and Herbology in her.

Mel’s best friend is her cousin, Demelza Robins (their mothers were sisters,) The two girls are starkly different in many respects, but have core similarities which would not be easily noticed by the outside observer. Melinda is far more likely to relax and be herself around Demelza, as she trusts the other girl to never desert her. Sometimes when with Demelza she even cracks jokes and laughs *gasp!* She also gets along fairly well with Demelza’s older twin brothers, and has a lot of affection for all of the Robins men. She’s just not very good at expressing it, (for example the twins once cracked a joke about how Melinda’s parents wouldn’t notice if they switched her for their younger brother Howell. Mel didn’t exactly love having her parents lack of interest in her pointed out. When Brae, the eldest boy, told off the twins, hugged Melinda and told her they loved her she was very stiff and thanked him.) Melinda is NOT under any circumstances incapable of love or affection, but she’s uncomfortable with giving anyone the opportunity to hurt her.

Besides taking NEWTs in Potions and Herbology, Melinda also takes Charms, Astronomy and Divination. The last is taken only so she can spend more time with Demelza. She doesn’t actually have any time for Trelawny and will probably be mildly amused by her removal. Or would be if it weren’t the ebil Umbridge doing the removal.

In terms of the war Melinda is not so much neutral as she is apathetic. She doesn’t hate Muggles or Muggleborns, but she’s also not very interested in them. They are what they are, and while she doesn’t find it appealing to go out and murder them she doesn’t think it’s any worse than murdering a Wizard. Murdering people in general is just unseemly.

Melinda isn’t a gossip in the traditional sense. She’s not prone to making things up. She’s just observant... and reports what she sees. This goes back to her odd kind of shyness and the need to point at someone else rather than have people see her. If she feels threatened she will deliver a death glare or a cutting remark. This tendency has earned her a reputation of an ice queen. She has conflicting feelings about this because on the one hand it means people leave her alone, but on the other she doesn’t like people hating her. She’s really just a confused, sad girl in need of some serious hugs.

Ideas for the character's involvement/contribution to the game: Hayley said we needed a gossip queen for ON, and I was only too happy to oblige :P No, really, Mel’s not *exactly* a gossip queen as was said above, but she will provide gossip. She’s a Slytherin girl, and we could sure use another one of those. I also think it’ll be interesting to see someone who is as secretly shy and emotionally stunted as Melinda deal with the changes the kids face in OotP, and hopefully she’ll learn to loosen up with this crazy crew we’ve got.
