Well, hmm... I guess Quidditch practices are going all right. It was rather by default for me to play Seeker than anything else, really, because no one came to try out for that position, and I was the reserve the year before last.

There's that often-quoted phrase from Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. "Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them." Perhaps Cedric was born great, or achieved greatness, but... inheriting -- for lack of a better word-- his position on the Quidditch team, feels thrust upon me. I was perfectly content to play Reserve, and given the choice, would much rather do so than be on the starting team due to these particular circumstances.

It seems as though many students are in kind of a state over the new DADA professor, and the curriculum she's set, and her title of High Inquisitor, and the fact that she's just cancelled tutoring. I don't take DADA any more, but I think that that may be a good thing, if she's causing so much trouble. There's something rather unsettling about her, and I don't even see her that often. Is she really out to incite divisions between the Ministry and the school? I hope not-- that would be terribly counterproductive, wouldn't it? I hope that those students lacking material on the subject can find a good solution soon.

There's a Hogsmeade weekend coming up, which is nice. I think one of mum's parcels got damaged in the post, because the birthday cake that she'd sent had a sizable dent in it. Not like someone was taking a bite out of it so much as poking around it to see if there was something funny in it, and it made a bit of a frightful mess of the frosting. Strange. But really, Mum didn't need to do it anyway. Brighton's quite the distance away from here, and Calchas makes her nervous at any rate. But really now, who on earth would want to poke around the contents of a homemade baked good?

To those who wished me a happy birthday, thank you. I am sorry I got all nervous when a few of you suggested a party.

But yes. This would be a nice time to send her a note of thanks with one of the express owls. It'd get to her faster that way.

Oh dear. Sarah's just come into the Common Room and is headed straight for me. Ack!

Don't get me wrong. I think Sarah's a lovely girl and all but she kind of scares me because she really REALLY likes to pat my cheeks and play with my hair. I don't know why. I also don't know why Jelena Dorny of Ravenclaw does the same. Or Tracey Davis of Slytherin. Or Ursula Grinnell of Gryffindor. Or... anyone, really.
