hello
newyorkers! you're all looking svelte, might I say. Is that a new outfit?
anywho, I come with sort of a weird request for advice. so let me lay a little bit of exposition on you:
my brother is 7. he lives in Florida and has only left Florida once to evacuate for a hurricane. his elementary school class is doing a geography project tying in with the children's book Flat Stanley. the book is about a kid who ends up being flattened so his mom sends him off in an envelope to California to see the sites or something to that effect. admittedly, I haven't read the book.
so I got this envelope in the mail with a Flat Stanley my brother has made. my brother's Flat Stanley wants to visit NYC.
But here's my dilemma:
I'm going to take a bunch of pictures with Flat Stanley around the more touristy parts of Manhattan, yes. it's unlikely that most of these 7-year old Floridians have been to the city, so it'll be fun for them to see things like the ESB, Times Square, Central Park, etc.
BUT. where are some other exciting non-Manhattan sites that I could show these kids? I was thinking Coney Island, but these kids live an hour away from some of the best theme parks in the country and might be unimpressed. the Roosevelt Island tram might be pretty cool, as would the Brooklyn Bridge. a friend mentioned every day things New Yorkers take for granted, like the subway, a taxi, street vendors, etc.
I've got until January to figure this all out (and make the coolest scrapbook ever for my brother to show off, thusly making him the coolest kid in the class). so holiday-related things will also be included, I'm sure. also, if you can think of any small souvenirs I could include (a metrocard and postcards are all I've got right now), I would be much obliged.
also: a Flat Stanley in my brother's class has already been to the Space Station, so I'm going to try and one-up space. if that's possible.
thanks ladies and gents, you all are wonderful!
