Rose crept through the front door to her house, one hand pressed up against the wall to guide her way in the darkness. She was just at the hallway when the living room lights flared into life, and she jumped, dropping her shoes and a small bag on the floor with a clatter. She groaned to herself and turned around, her face falling into angry lines as she saw Hugo sitting on their father's favourite armchair, his arms crossed over his body.

"Hugo!" she whispered angrily, bending down quickly to pick up her things before advancing on her younger brother. "What are you doing in here? Were you spying on me?"

"I was worried about you," Hugo replied calmly, his expression unreadable.

"Worried about me? Why? Since when do you worry about me? That's more dad's job than yours." Despite her words, Rose felt a tiny flash of gold in her heart at the idea that her baby brother already wanted to look out for her, and her fear of getting caught slowly began to dissipate.

"Well with your record you need all the back-up you can get," Hugo replied, his eyes sparkling. "But really Rose, you shouldn't sneak out. Just tell mum and dad who it is you're seeing, and I bet they'll be fine with it."
Rose rubbed a hand across her tired eyes with a sigh.

"You know I can't do that, Hugo. Imagine dad's face if I told him I was going out to see Scorpius Malfoy! He would kill me!"

Her eyes still closed, Rose didn't see Hugo stiffen in his chair, didn't see his eyes glaze over or his hands begin to shake. The witch took her brother's silence as agreement and stood up, ruffling Hugo's hair with one hand as she passed.

"It's still our secret, okay?" she mumbled before disappearing down the hallway.

Still seated in his chair, Hugo's hands shook more, and as he blinked he seemed to change, growing taller as he sat still, his dark hair growing longer and turning red.

Ron sat in silence for a few more minutes, processing just what he had learned, and decided to do nothing, not yet. After all, he wasn't the only one telling little white lies.

'Hugo did you eat all those chocolate frogs?' Hermione questioned. He was sitting at the kitchen table, a mountain of chocolate frog wrappers beside him and chocolate smeared around his lips. The guilty look on his face was more than enough to send him to bed with no dinner. 'No Mum, Dad helped him' Rose answered, the innocent look on her face fooling her mother. As their mother turned her back, Rose smiled at Hugo as he looked back at her gratefully. 'Ron...'Hermione grumbled as she left the room.

**********************************************************************

'Who said you could go flying at this hour, young man? Hmm?' Hermione interrogated Hugo. He looked at the ground sheepishly, his cheeks the same colour as his hair, and not because of the wind. 'Dad did, you know how he is!' Rose quipped. Hermione fell for her daughter's answer. It didn't seem too out of the ordinary. 'Ron!' She yelled, walking out of the room in search of her wayward husband, not noticing that as she left, Hugo and Rose shared a secret smile and a sly wink.

************************************************************************

'Is that Malfoy boy Rose's boyfriend?' Ron asked during a chess match between himself and Hugo. 'Nope, she's just studying with him in the hope he'll slip something about Ravenclaw's Quidditch strategy.' Hugo replied quick as a whip. 'Oh that's my girl' Ron muttered off handedly.

It was six months later when that little white lie was needed to help Rose get out of the tightest situation she had ever been in, for all those little white lies she had told on behalf of Hugo, she had never needed any in return. Until now. 'Who said Rose could stay out till this hour with Scorpius Malfoy?' Hermione demanded. 'Dad did, Mum. He said he knew how important this relationship was to me' Rose said. 'Yup he said that, I heard him' Hugo backed her up. 'RON!' Hermione's shrill voice echoed in the hall.

White lies were integral to siblings' relationship. They strengthened the bonds between a brother and a sister, and helped them unify against their common enemy. The parents. Everyone needed a partner in crime to help them get out of tough spots. No one ever got hurt, well except for their Dad maybe.

Their first "secret between us" as Rose called them was between Rose's first and second year. They were staying at Albus' and they were suppose to be finishing their summer homework.

James blew in with two kids in his year. "We're going flying, you two in?" They couldn't say no; not when James a third year was asking them.

As Rose got ready Hugo shifted restlessly, "But Mum thinks you're finishing your schoolwork."

Rose smiled, "don't worry, Hugo. I'll finish."

"But Mum-"

"You wouldn't tell Mum, would you?" Rose gave him a stern look, not surprising, it looked ike their mother.

"I don't want to lie, Rosie."

"It's only a little white lie, Hugo. You can do that, right?" He didn't have to think it over long, his big sister wanted to share something with him. "Just think of it as a secret between us," Rose ruffled his hair.

After that there were tons of secrets and the white lies kept piling up. Most were tiny and harmless; Rose snuck out with Albus a lot and did Merlin only knew what. Some were bigger but still harmless; Rose charged younger students for tutoring. Hugo didn't know what she did with the money.

Then they got bigger, and weren't harmless anymore. In Rose's sixth year Hugo caught her smoking cigarettes. He didn't understand, and he needed to; this wasn't Rosie. He decided then it was time to follow his sister and find out what she was doing.

He was able to follow them easily, and wasn't surprised when they headed toward the Astronomy tower. Hugo waited a few stairs down before sneaking up to peek at them. What he saw made him angrier at his sister.

Rose had shed her robes and was dressed in an outfit he knew their parents hadn't gotten her. She had a cigarette in one hand and a mug in the other; he was going to assume it was butterbeer. She was dancing lewdly with a boy in her year, and his hands were all over her. Hugo wanted to burst in there and drag her out, but he knew what would happen. She'd ask him to keep her secret and he would. When had the little secrets amounted to this?

Rose squirmed in her seat, glancing nervously around her before resting her eyes on the short redhead sitting in front of the room. Her brother had been under the Sorting Hat for what seemed like an hour. No Weasley had been Sorted anywhere but Gryffindor in generations - what could be the hold-up this time?

Students were beginning to grumble. Hugo was last in line to be Sorted and currently the only thing between them and their meal. She could see some of them gazing forlornly at their empty plates, ready to pounce as soon as the food appeared. Her only hope was that they would be too weak from hunger to plot any sort of revenge on this poor innocent little First Year. That is, if she could convince the student body that her brother was poor and innocent and little.

Rose squinted her eyes, trying to get a better view of her brother. She could only see from his nose down and he was grinning like an idiot. She mentally face-palmed herself. Leave it to Hugo. He was probably telling the hat knock-knock jokes while the rest of the student body starved to death.

She thought back to her own Sorting. It was only two years before but it felt like a lifetime ago. Sitting on that uncomfortable stool, the hat placed gently on her head, a voice buzzing in her ear. Ah, another Weasley. Bravery, inner strength, importance of family and friends... no question where to put you... The entire ordeal had taken maybe twenty seconds.

Hugo, on the other hand, was going on twenty minutes now. Her friends had started to time him. This had to be some sort of record. She would have to write to Mum later to ask her.

Finally, mercifully, the Sorting Hat contorted and shouted, “GRYFFINDOR!” Hugo slipped off the hat, beaming, and made his way over to his sister like absolutely nothing was out of the ordinary.

He plopped down next to her, still smiling from ear to ear. “So, how'd I do?”

“Er,” Rose was dying to ask him what the hell went wrong, but something told her this just wasn't the time. “You did great, kid. Welcome to Gryffindor.”

"How do I look?"

In the million times Rose had asked him, Hugo didn't think he'd ever given a correct answer. Hugo sighed and set his book ("Hogwarts: A History, 32nd Revised Edition") down on a side table.

"You look fine."

"Really?"

She had a tendency to contradict him immediately after he'd given the response she was looking for. It irritated him to no end.

"Honestly, Scorpius is not going to care if your shirt clashes with your hair. He's not."

Rose gasped. "My shirt clashes with my hair?"

"No!" Hugo dropped his head into his hands. "You look fine. And I'm going to reiterate- he won't care. Men just want you to...well, you know. Be willing, or whatever. But I'm sure smelling nice and being clean is important. I know I don't care what girls are wearing. Honestly, we just like to have girls around."

Rose sniffed her disapproval and grabbed her bag. "You're such a little boy, Hugh," she said airily. "Would you just tell me how I look, please?"

Hugo rolled his eyes and gave her the good old once-over, finding nothing wrong. Well, nothing except the giant hunk of lunch still between Rose's teeth. But he knew if he brought it up, he'd have to live through another round of "oh gods, what's wrong with me, I'm so gross" and he didn't want to put himself through that hell any more than he had to. What harm was a little white lie going to do, anyway?

"You look fine. Really. I mean it."

Rose grinned and kissed him on the cheek. "Wish me luck, then." She slung her purse over her shoulder and practically sprinted down the stairs to where she was to meet Scorpius. She'd spent so much time stressing over her outfit that she was already fifteen minutes late.

Rose found him leaning against one of the old stone pillars and ran up to join him. "Hey," she greeted breathily.

Scorpius laughed.

"What?"

"Trying to earn some extra credit for Herbology?"

Rose looked puzzled. "No, you know I don't need it. Why do you ask?"

"You've got a greenhouse growing between your teeth. Seriously, what have you been eating?"

Rose dropped her head against Scorpius's shoulder and groaned.

Title:Telling Lies...
Words:375
Rating:PG 13

Hugo Weasley had an especially close relationship with his sister Rose. Growing up they’d shared everything, having few secrets from one another.

Oh, there were the occasional little white lies.

For example, there was the time Rose had asked Hugo if her curls looked any better after she’d used an entire bottle of Sleek Easy Curl Taming Potion and he’d answered yes. (Her hair had looked straighter for sure, but also much, much greasier).

Then there were also the many outright lies told in the name of survival.

For example, there was an incident when he and their little cousin Molly had been playing ball in Rose’s bedroom and broken her favorite porcelain doll… they’d both made hasty retreats and then feigned total innocence.

Now there were the secrets he kept to hide his love affair.

There were the many lies about extra Quidditch practices and countless detentions when he was really going to meet up in an abandoned classroom with Rose’s classmate Scorpius Malfoy. He kept hidden their tawdry affair, unsure if his sister could handle the fact that her only brother was indeed gay. Until he was certain where he was headed in this relationship, he didn’t wish to cause Rose or any of the rest of his family any unneeded heartache. After all, the family had been through so much already.

He and Scorpius kept up a believable charade, by both dating females and acting like strangers when they passed in the halls. Hugo knew it was wrong to string along the young Hufflepuff girl he was currently seeing but he saw no other way. He loved his sister and would do anything to keep her from being hurt. He felt the only way to protect Rose was to tell her the lies.

Then came the day that Hugo entered the Slytherin commons to meet his cousin Albus and saw Scorpius and Rose snogging in a heated tangle. It was then that Hugo realized how much telling lies could hurt you. With an image of his handsome lover kissing his sister, he ran out of the room with a determination to stop telling lies.

The time had finally come when the best way of protecting Rose was by telling her the truth.

Rose turned up at Uncle George’s house in London in a swirl of green flame, and exited the fire beaming at Uncle George. He reached out to her and they hugged. She immediately began on her rant, that she knew why Hugo spent so much time with George, that Hugo was going to be an apprentice at Weasley Wizard Wheezes. Mum said it was selfish of Uncle George if it was true. Rose couldn’t quite see how that worked. She wanted to join them. She was in her final year at Hogwarts and was longing to find a place to lay her ambitions bare. She had always thought she would like to work as the owner of a joke shop. She didn’t want to work for the Ministry. Too prissy.

Auntie Angelina scooped Rose away from George. “Don’t break her ribs,” Angelina told George reprovingly. “That’s hard, kitten, as she is nothing but ribs.” Angelina gave a crooked grin. “She’s been using Stretching Jinxes again, she’s taller than me now!”

“Stop ribbing her about being as insubstantial as a light wind,” Hugo said, winking, his face looking so much like old photos of Uncle Bill. Rose scowled. “Nice way to greet me, you’re really very revolting sometimes.” Hugo exchanged a pained look with Uncle George. They had a joke about her ‘dark truths.’ The next minute Rose was begging Hugo to find out if he’d got his letter from Hogwarts. Again, Hugo sounded weary. At least I am not a Prefect. If I was, that would be revolting.”

“You’re blushing!” Rose said sharply. “What’s so funny?”

“You being Head Girl! And you really think Uncle George wants you in his shop.” Hugo was smirking. So were George and Angelina. Rose wanted to strangle all of them. “Ravenclaws can bend rules too, you know, that’s not merely a Gryffindor pursuit!” she snarled at them. They were all laughing now. She had to endure a weekend of dashed hopes just because she had a badge... “Why can’t I join in?”

Hugo and George exchanged glances, snickering, then said in unison, “Tell us no little black truths, and we’ll tell you no little white lies.”

As serious and earnest as Rose always was, even she laughed at that.
