Sting tonight in the Budapest Arena - Talent Is Sexy

Jun 27, 2012 00:02

Okay, so we went to see Sting tonight. This was my fifth time seeing him live but I hope that it wasn't the last.

First of all: Sting is sexy!

Not that it's relevant or anything, I just thought I'd throw it in here. I still wouldn't mind him warming my bed for a few nights. My mom agrees, she wouldn't mind him getting in her bed either:)

But what is relevant, that he's still in top shape as a perfomer, both physically and vocally. The same goes for Dominic Miller, his guitarist.

When we arrived I actually felt embarrassed. The Budapest Arena was half empty. They waited for about 15 minutes then started to play to a half full arena. Their last tour, Symphonycity had been sooo successful that they had come to us the second time with the same show and again the arena had been packed. The way it had been all the four times I had previously gone to see him. Not this time though. But what it's worth, the small crowd was really enthusiastic and as loud as it would have been with a crowd twice as big. Almost every performer says that playing for a hungarian audience is a pleasure, because they are so loud and enthusiastic. Tonight wasn't an exception.

I had joked in the last few days that I thought this would be an intimate night with only me and him and his music, and that the other 10000 people shouldn't be there to ruin it, but this hadn't been what I had meant, really. I wish more people had bought tickets. I hope this won't keep him from coming here next time. It had probably been down to the economical situation, or more like the bad organization of the event (which is more likely).

Sting started out by greeting us in Hungarian, which he always does, with a very cute accent.
Then the show kicked off with All This Time. They played a lot of old songs mostly from Ten Summoner's Tales and Mercury Falling and quite a few Police songs which were all really nice to hear, especially in these new arrangements. They were bold and energetic, and I was pleased with the playlist, even though I missed some of the great, popular songs that they often do live. But I know he has too many songs, it's hard to choose, and even harder to please everyone.

Englishman In New York was the third song in the show and it helped to build a great mood, everyone was cheering and clapping. There weren't many slow ballads, only the most beautiful ones (Fields Of Gold, Shape Of My Heart) and they did not fail to bring tears to my eyes, though I missed Fragile (and Roxanne) a bit.

There were songs I had never heard on concert before like Demolition Man, Heavy Cloud But No Rain, Driven To Tears, Hounds Of Winter, Love Is Stronger Than Justice, Seven Days, and The End Of The Game, so I was more than happy that I didn't skip this opportunity to hear them. And my personal favorite I Hung My Head was also there!:D

After the "last" song they came back and ended the night with Desert Rose, King Of Pain, Every Breath You Take and finally, Next To You (which was a nice surprise actually, but totally understandable when I think about it, it being the first song from the first Police album in 1978).

Sting proved again that good music sells itself, without show elements, dancers, videos or pictures in the background or big volume. Just six musicians doing nothing else on stage but play.

I'm not the screaming fangirl type, but I can scream my lugs out when I hear good music, and I heard a lot of that tonight. My throat is actually sore from the half singing half screaming I did. I wanted to do another TALENT IS SEXY post but this post fits that series perfectly.

Sting is very talented, I have a lot of respect for him. I know I'm ranting about how sexy he is, but what I really think of him deep in my heart, that he is a true legend. All the thoughts and emotions he's communicating with his music and his lyrics are unique, and I hope that 2-300 years from now people will look at his life work and realize just how influential he is.

I didn't quite catch his name but there was a young guy who played the violin and did some amazing solos. He's very talented, I'm sure we'll be hearing his name in the future.

ETA: I looked him up. His name is Peter Tickell, 26 years old and one of the U.K.'s most profilic young musicians. He had played on If On A Winter's Night in 2009, so Sting asked him to join them on the Back To Bass tour at the end of 2011.

The ticket prices were high but I regret nothing. It was worth every forint (HUF, Hungarian currency), I'd buy it again in a heartbeat (and I will when they'll come here next time).

All in all it was an awesome night, a night to remember.
