Just some thoughts on "Frontierland."

Yes, it is blatant blatant fanservice. Might be the most fanservice I've seen anywhere since "Moon Child" (which is a Japanese movie starring two Japanese rock stars and one of them is a vampire and the other one is a gangster so yeah, lots and lots of fanservice). But...I don't care. They pretty much told us it was going to be fanservice, so I was ready for it.

I'm a little bummed that S&D didn't have more screentime together since everything since Sam got his soul back has been as good interaction-wise as pre-Hell. The 18th episode last year was the 100th, one of the all-time lows in their relationship when Dean tells Sam he has no faith in him. Something that had been building since Ruby came back and festering since she died. Since "Swan Song," that's been gone. They are back to the relationship that got me invested in the show in the first place.

Yes, Cass is being very weird. "Weird" doesn't go far enough. I'm trusting them to make it right by the end of the season. They somehow repaired S&D's relationship, so I trust them.

Rachel sure was all build-up with no pay-off. Wow. It is a major complaint that the show wastes female characters. Gwen went NOWHERE and was completely pointless, and Rachel is somehow even worse. Was there a plan for her? Will we see more in flashback? It really seems like they are making this up as they go. They had an idea of Point A (Sam Has No Soul) and Point B (Eve: The Mother of All Monsters), but in between has been pretty mushy. It doesn't seem to me like most of the plans they were using during the first half a dozen episodes still apply. Balthy seemed to be more nefarious, for example.

Those are the complaints.

THAT SAID.

I enjoyed this. It seemed really crammed in and fast, yes, but I am OK with that. I do not expect every episode to be amazing from pacing to content since I feel like we are living on borrowed time as it is. It's a miracle we got any of this and I am so grateful every week. Not that the people who dislike it are ungrateful, of course. We are the reason they are still around and we hold it to high standards because we know how amazing it can be.

Whatever, I liked it. I thought the writing was sharp, as far as dialogue goes, the story worked despite feeling rushed, and really? They pulled it off.

- March 5th is my mom's birthday.

- No wonder Sam's clothes look dumb. DEAN picked them out. Ah, Dean Dean Dean...

- Bobby saying he only watched "Deep Space Nine" cracked me up.

- The time card at the beginning made me laugh too.

- "Giant from the future" haha.

- Dean didn't get to ride a pony :( He somehow seemed to know a little about it, though. I know better than to really question when Sam and Dean had horseback riding lessons, but....I kind of question when Sam and Dean had horseback riding lessons.

- Sam's hat was much nicer than Dean's.

- I wanted Sam to kick Dean with his shitty shoe, heh heh.

- Bobby insulting Sam's intelligence was not funny. Yes, I'm sure Castiel's big math explanation would have been over Sam's head, but it would have been over Bobby's too. Sam is not dumb. Enough already.

- The scene with the salloon girl hitting on Dean was not funny either. It was sexist. Dean could never want to kiss her cause she is bigger than a twig and is made up to look slightly less than movie-star attractive. And it's hilarious to Sam too, so I consider him as bad as Dean. OK I know the real problem was the sores on her mouth, but that's not really how it came off. And then later when we are supposed to sympathise with her she doesn't look as off. They shoot her from the other side. They get a few props for giving her the sore at all, but if they wanted to make a "The West Was Not Romantic" point, they should have given her more cause it really came off like Dean didn't want to kiss her cause she wasn't good enough for him -_- And then they are happy that Dean is rescued from her by someone who is paying to have sex with her -_- Between that and Rachel, this episode was not kind to women.

- Rachel is one of a few angels who doesn't have a leg crossed when she dies. I can only remember her, Uriel, and the mysterious blond angel not having a leg crooked.

- "'Gank?' What's 'Gank'?" lol

- Samuel Colt writes left-handed. He shoots right-handed, but it's the hand you write with that counts.

- This is still way too pretty and clean for the Old West. "Highlander" has its problems with the period stuff, but some of their period episodes were way closer to the actual period than this, if you ask me.

- Love to the windmill, which has appeared in several SPN episodes including "Swan Song."

- So Dean doesn't get to ride a pony, but Sam doesn't get to gunfight. So it evens out. Sort of. Not quite. Cause it's still The Dean Show as far as some of the writers are concerned,

- I think the scene between Colt and Sam was very good. Particular love for Sam's face when he tells Colt about his mileage. EVERYONE is underestimating Sam.

- Colt was a little bit of a loser. OK, he was retired. So was Rufus. And you know I don't like Rufus, so when I say Rufus > Colt (at least what we saw in this episode), you gotta know it means something. Yes, sammiifer reminds me that he was building the Devil's Gate 'n all, and I know the plot needs S&D to do all the work and we would not be happy if Colt stepped in to shoot the SOB instead of Dean. I'm just saying Colt seemed a little too passive.

- I love it whenever a monster on SPN is sympathetic. This guy definitely was. And the scene in the jailhouse was nicely done too.

- I think the phoenix's backstory would make a great one-shot comic.

- I wonder which composer did this one. Usually Gruska does the wild ones like "Monster Movie," so I would guess he did this one too. But I can't tell.

- Poor Bobby.

- And I loved the ending with the package.

Overall I enjoyed it. I don't think it'll be in my top favorites, but it is a noteable episode and a lovely little gift.
