Supernatural Anime episode 17: "Rising Son"

This one is based on a comic.

Spoilers

Dean's talking to Missouri. He's sad cause John told him he might have to kill Sam someday. The anime dragged the "What did John whisper?" question out over many episodes and a haitus. Way to keep it quick, anime. Awwww Dean is seriously crying.

John left a box of family photos for Dean, so Dean starts looking at them and one (a pic of a pretty lady), sparks a flashback. Hurray! Something the show doesn't do often enough.

Omg, Little Sam's voice sounds pretty bad o_O So, turns out the woman is Miss Lyle, Sam's elementary school teacher. I have read enough of "John's Journal" to know that she is bad news. God, I wish they had someone who could act playing Little Sam -_-

John and Dean go off to practice hunting, leaving Sam to sleep. Dean doesn't like Miss Lyle being around so much. His actor is better than Sam's. So they are hunting a huge.....moose? With red eyes? OK. Dean runs after it, trips, and looks like he really hurts himself. Bullwinkle glares at him and approaches, but THEN IT FUCKING EXPLODES AND PIECES OF IT AND BLOOD GET ALL OVER DEAN WHAT THE HELL. That's one of the goriest things I've ever seen in anime. JESUS, SAM SHOT IT! Or.....something. But he doesn't have a weapon and doesn't know how the moose thing happened O_O His actor is a little better when she (it's clearly a woman) is serious. Then John shows up and then Sam faints.

Miss Lyle says she lost her son and husband. Then she tells Sam he can call her "Susan," then Sam gives her a necklace (and he only gives jewelry to people he likes), then she cries and they hug and Sam is happy. Then....the house is being shot at? So John, Susan, and Sam duck. Then it stops and Dean comes down the stairs. Sam is sad cause "now the bad guys" know where they are, and they'll have to move, and he doesn't want to move away from Miss Lyle. Then she says he could come with her and puts a hand on his head, which glows and makes him faint. This disturbs Dean.

So John chases after the shooter, somehow cornering him on a bridge. I gotta say, John's look is very different, but his character is pretty much the same. Anyway, the shooter was a hunter who already knows Sam is special. Sam exploding the moose is an early sign. John flips out about hunters wanting to kill Sam, but the hunter says he shouldn't have left Sam with Miss Lyle.

They cut to Sam passed out (and drooling) in the car with her, Dean on a skateboard hanging onto the back. Her eyes go demony.

Hunter Anderson explains that she made a deal with a demon to save her husband and kid. He also says that a demon told him that Sam was going to be a demon head honcho leader. Wow, good thing the hunters decided to take a break from hunting Sam while he was an easy target in college, right? John stabs the dude dead, but seems sorry about it.

Suddenly Dean is on the ground and Miss Lyle is outside holding Sam. How did that happen? I guess there was a minor accident and I missed it. Dean slowely gets up and is all heroy, but she makes a bunch of broken cars (they must be in a junk yard) attack him. Japan, come on, how do you work mecha into EVERY show? XD

Dean: A GIANT ROBOT?!

XD XD XD

So Sam wakes up and is o_0 Dean tells him to run, she tells him she wants to stay with him forever. Sam doesn't seem that O_O about the "giant robot." I can't tell when this is supposed to take place. So Miss Lyle tells Sam to choose between her and Dean, saying she'll be his mother, but Sam says he wants a mother for Dean AND him. D'awww. Then a demony voice tells her to kill Dean, but she saves him from the mecha. Then John drives up and there's a pentagram on the ground? John says he made it? Whatever. John latinates and the mecha writhes around and dies. John thinks the robot chunks have killed them and for a moment he wonders if that would be a bad thing cause of what the hunter said, but he's still happy when they show up totally fine. Sam sort of equates his loss of Miss Lyle with Dean's loss of Mary. Then the sun rises. Oh hey, title.

Cut to modern Dean sitting on the chimmney. Then Sam shows up pissed off that Dean didn't say he was leaving. Dean tells him to come up, Sam doesn't want to, Dean orders him to, cut to Sam edging along the roof bitch facing. Then the sun rises and Dean remarks about how John always loved the sunrise. Then Missouri is mad that they are on the roof.

Post Credits. Driving in the Impala. Dean mentally apologises to John, saying that he can't carry out his last wish. He promises Sam (in his mind) that he will never let him die. "No matter what I have to sacrifice." They are leading up to "All Hell Breaks Loose" very very well.

That was fantastic. I couldn't be happier with that episode. It's the kind of thing the show doesn't do enough, depicting their childhoods. It gives very good "All Hell Breaks Loose" forshadowing as well. That said, on the show Dean was grieving for John for a long time. Here he seems pretty OK. No sadder than Sam, anyway. And the car is magically fine. We can assume Dean fixed it, of course, but on the show him fixing it was kind of important. However, if we are going to compare Post "In My Time of Dying" episodes, I actually liked this better than the clown episode from the series, aside from the lack of John grief.

And they worked mecha into an episode of Supernatural, haha.

Edit: They address the grief and the fixing of the car expertly in the next episode, so strike my complaints.
