"And is it wrong to hold the kids when they want to be held? ..I don't get it."

Actually it's borderline illegal o.O Sadly that's the world we live in. New teachers go through a very involved class about what touching they can and cannot do in what circumstances and when. It's recommended that for lawsuit purchases that teacher never touch or hug students except at graduations/last day of class. Teachers are also supposed to hug shoulders, side by side. The adults you work with were probably told something similar to avoid lawsuits.

It really all depends on what center you work at, and the other teachers that you work with. We let our kids play whereever they wanted, but certain things had to stay on certain sides of the room (like paints, for example). It also depends on the age group you are working with. I worked with infants and toddlers, and they were pretty much allowed to play with whatever wherever. The 3 and 4 year olds were only allowed to play with certain things in certain areas, but they weren't confined to one side of the room. They did have to clean up before they could go to another area, though ( ... )

I had the same experience right here in Singapore. The only time I'm talking to the children will be the dreadful "no" or shouting... O_o

Do you mean holding hands? It should be all right for younger children or the newcomers. Let them feel a sense of security. I tend to hug the toddlers a little too much though... ^^;;

All the best though! It will be a good experience for you! :D
