I guess we shouldn't have been so surprised that there was a 500,000 strong march in LA, but thlu, who lives in LA, says that you'd be luck y if you can get 10,000 people to an anti-war march.  So 500,000 is a BIG suprise, but it's probably just a small example of what obvious suppression can lead to: people organized and resist.

the last time la had a protest that big was probably in 1994 against prop 187 - there was about 500,000 marching in the streets, mainly immigrants! i dunno whaz up with the bay.

Yeah, it seems like the SF orgs were putting a lot of energy into the hunger strike instead of a single mass mobe. A hunger strike requires a lot of prep, as we know from experience.
