nice dude, I need to get an HDTV myself, its on a list of stuff to buy/indulge myself with. I'm sure DVDs will look fine with what you bought the only thing you could have bought that would have been better is a blu-ray dvd player, (I recommend the PS3 as a good blu-ray player). But with the size your TV I don't think a blu-ray player is necessary, and it will be hard to tell the differences, an upconvert DVD player like the one you bought will look good. I don't know if your new player uses an HDMI cable or not, if it does, do not buy an HDMI cable at the store, buy it online they all work the same, except the ones you buy at the store will leave your anus sore as your wallet has just been raped.
I like it. I've since hooked it up and the DVDs look great, maybe even better than on my old tv. Cable TV looks so-so. I bought the DVD / VCR to play the VHS tape and DVDs I already own. Pretty soon I'll buy a Blu-ray player and maybe a Blu-ray drive for my computer too, then I'll start purchasing my videos in Blu-ray format. That won't be until I build up some more cash which might take a while since my car is still having problems.
I went and bought an HDMI cable at the store since they didn't come with one. I wanted to hook the DVD/VCR up through the superior HDMI mediam. Yea the price hurt. $30 for a 6' cable. Next time I'll check online first.
Cables are dirt cheap at www.monoprice.com, don't buy them anywhere else. As for the blu-ray player, the ps3 is the best thing on the market because it is easily upgradable when the new blu-ray standards are released. It's the only BD-Live player currently on the market, and also upconverts standard DVD to 1080p. I'd say wait on the blu-ray drive for your computer as they're still waaaaaay too expensive.
They also mave A/V receivers that upconvert cable signals to HD if you're interested in something like that. They're pretty pricey though. Most of the decent ones run $500+ and you have to buy the speakers separately.
I agree with everything you said Blake. I am just wondering if it's necessary to go with the blu-ray with only a 32" screen. Depending on distance from the screen with the size I'm not to sure a difference will be easily seen between the upconvert and blu-ray. Back in SB at a friends house I experimented between watching '300' on a Xbox 360, then the HD-DVD version using the add-on drive. The TV was a 37" LCD, granted I do not believe it was 1080P and we were using analong component cable, but I just think if the screensize is >42" the difference is not too notable.
