Really curious to see how this one goes, as it's heavily influenced by Matt Fraction's Hawkeye series, which was great stuff. That version of Hawkeye was not what we've been getting in the MCU, but that looks like it's about to change. Basically, he's a walking disaster. Okay, a limping disaster ( Read more... )

I sent a link to the trailer to a friend who's not on LJ or Tumblr, with the comment that this is the Hawkeye I've been waiting for and never expected to see.

That look on his face over Kate's reaction to more dangerous arrows is the most Fraction-era Hawkeye expression I've ever seen.

Haha, true!

I also liked when he sank into the couch exhausted, like, it's been such a long day!

I also liked him talking to his wife on the phone, doing a "just a minute" and tossing a Molotov cocktail back at the Tracksuit Mafia without hesitation or even concern. That moment seems to be merging MCU!Hawkeye with Fraction!Hawkeye, and I'm not complaining.

I’m not sure how to feel about this… I LOVE the Matt Fraction Hawkeye SO MUCH. And the MCU Hawkeye was not that, so okay, different Hawkeye. But now they’re taking that married-with-children MCU Hawkeye and making him MF version? I haven’t decided yet whether I can mentally bridge the disconnect or not…

We're getting Fraction inspired Hawkeye because it's been so popular, but it's not going to be the flip of a switch to get there. I also don't think it's very permanent. I think this is intended to introduce Kate Bishop and then segue into Young Avengers. I think she's the last one we need for the set.

Yeah, that looks like a substantially different version of Hawkeye. I'm not sure how this is gonna work.

(I got really ticked off at Jeremy Renner for some things he said. I still think he's a jerk. But he's got a lot of talent, too, so I'm very conflicted and will probably watch.)

I'm really thinking this may be Renner's last major bit as Hawkeye, and it's to pass on the mantle of Hawkeye to Kate Bishop, using the Fraction series as inspiration. I don't think they'll kill him off, but after this series ends, it'll just be a movie cameo at most.

Getting Kate on our screen is the last piece to get all the Young Avengers, though due to the nature of the MCU, their interactions are going to be very different from the comics. Especially since some of the adult Avengers that were in charge in the comics are dead in the MCU.

I think I got into Renner's run as Hawkeye more because of the potential for the character than anything. Especially after I read the Fraction series. Plus he and RDJ are actually about my age and don't make me feel ancient.

I'm very conflicted about some of the things he's said and done, but I never know how much of that is reality and how much is internet outrage. I try to separate actors from their work, but sometimes it's difficult.
