I read the graphic novels several years ago, I think around the time there was last talk of adapting it for a movie or series. It's my usual kryptonite of a high concept idea without a definite answer, at least as far as the comic was concerned. It did give answers, it just didn't tell you which one was correct. Brilliant Husband has read some but not all of the graphic novels. I think we're going to have to read them all now, though it will be weird for me to come to them and not see the recognition of women's deaths and trans, nonbinary, and intersex people.

When this was first announced, I wasn't sure how much of the original they would cover. It would have been feasible to do a single series with a good beginning, middle, and end. From what I can tell, they've pulled elements from the first two out of 23 story arcs. Instead of a lot of "road trip" stories, we're getting more backstory on various plot threads.
The recognition of people who did not fit our neat boxes of male and female was the best update they've done so far. I'd like to go back and reread with the concepts they've brought up in mind to see how well it would fit.
