Update...
Thanks to everyone sending well wishes, positive thoughts, and prayers to my friend.
After two surgeries yesterday, and concern about brain damage - he's awake. That's the big news of the day. I don't have very clear information right now - he can't talk (he's still hooked up to machines, or intubated or something) but apparently he is blinking. It sounds as though he is responsive. I'm hoping to know more when I get back to Chicago tomorrow morning.
This is not the Chrismukkah trip home I'd hoped for... but right now, there's only one thing I want this year.

Off for 4 1/2 hours of sleep before I get to head to the airport. Not that I slept at all last night. I woke up every hour and a half and had to turn "The Office" back on my laptop to distract myself.
Secret Santa ("Yaaaaaankee Swap") at work today. I got a lovely gift basket with wine and candy.
